A job, employment, work or occupation, is a person's role in society. More specifically, a job is an activity, often regular and often performed in exchange for payment ("for a living"). Many people have multiple jobs (e.g., parent, homemaker, and employee). A person can begin a job by becoming an employee, volunteering, starting a business, or becoming a parent. The duration of a job may range from temporary (e.g., hourly odd jobs) to a lifetime (e.g., judges).
An activity that requires a person's mental or physical effort is work (as in "a day's work"). If a person is trained for a certain type of job, they may have a profession. Typically, a job would be a subset of someone's career. The two may differ in that one usually retires from their career, versus resignation or termination from a job.
I applied for a job at a semitech company that makes NAND. Anyone know of a good book or source that I can find detailed structure information. The job posting also mentioned probe and param, which I don't know details about. Any help is appreciated.
Hey guys. Could you give me a list of some of the things you have had to do during your time as an Engineer? I want to know the good bits as well as the bad bits. I have looked at videos on Youtube but i feel as though Youtube may give the idea that Engineering is all pro's and no con's...

So I am doing a 3-2 program in Physics and Nuclear engineering. I spent my first 3 years at West chester university and am about to spend my next 2 at Penn State University Park. When its all said and done I will have a B.S. in Physics and a Minor in Mathematics from West...
Any biotech workers here? How did you get "experience" before your 1st job?
So I'm graduating in 3 more weeks with a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I've been looking online for lab tech jobs (private and academic) and there seems to be a lot of jobs available; unfortunately I...
i have been reading around about physics degree gpa's and businesses looking at resumes and the first thing they see is gpa...etc... my question pertains to the importance of my gpa as a whole, or my gpa of math and physics classes alone. I am asking this because my gpa isn't that high right now...
Those in a CpE, CS, or EE career: I'm having a terrible time deciding to what to major in, and I'd like your input. I understand that EE and CpE involve lots of work with electrical circuits, and that CpE also involves a lot of programming (but not as much as CompSci.) I enjoy...
I'm currently studying Electrical Engineering, but I like Physics a lot more. The only reason I didn't initially major in Physics was that Engineering was much more employable. This may not be a great question, but what opportunities are available to someone who has a masters degree or higher in...
Yesterday I had a job offer as a "planning manager" from a company that is located pretty far away from where I am living. The job's main task is to keep the warehouse of IT related materials which are mainly about industrial ICs and to prepare as well as to make deal with worldwide customers...
"A statistician will always have a job?"
I attended a college fair, where one would meet the department chair of each program, and inquire about one's interests.
I, obviously, was talking to the mathematics department chair, about job prospects, opportunities, and potentiality with the...
I graduated from university in the liberal arts a few years ago, and oddly enough fell in LOVE with electricity and everything about it since. Whether it's in the application of designing computer chips and circuits, to power stations and energy systems, I have made the decision to go back to...

Medical Physics - A general "job description" as opposed to a radiation oncologist
Forgive my ignorance, but Medical Physics/Radiation Oncology is one of those fields who's typical work day is still a mystery to me.
Are medical physicists the "primary guy" when it comes to treating patients...
(and other questions...)
I've become quite interested in nuclear engineering. I'm thinking about studying computational science, in particular. My university, University of Illinois, has a technical track specifically for this purpose.
I've become a little concerned as I look around at...
I'm graduating from high school and I have no idea what my job should be or if a suitable even exists.
I'd really like a job that allows me to be away from civilization and in nature for extended periods of time. It absolutely does not matter where. Problem is, those jobs usually involve...
Long story short, I flunked out of grad school for a physics PhD last year. My advisor hired me on as an employee in the lab. Basically I made a grad student salary and worked like a grad student, but it wasn't towards a degree. Now I want to find a "real" job that I can actually support myself...
Why hello there,
Before I state the question I would just like to give a short background tour:
I'm 17 years old, live in Iceland and have wanted to be a physicist for many years and for some quite some time I've wanted to be a particle physicist in particular. I've always gotten 9's and...
I'm not 100% sure where this belongs, but, I have a script that will allow me to modify the mesh size of an individual part in abaqus, and then execute a job on that part. my question is How do I go about changing the mesh size for multiple parts?
*edit* removed first part of question, wasn't...
I'm going to finish my PhD in maths in a few next months. I'm looking for a new job for the future. I really exciting in looking for a job in Finance. But, I don't know where is the starting point. I have learned a course on maths finance when I was in master program. So I understand a little...
Have kinda of an ethics question here. I work for company A and have an interview with company B. Company B would like to see examples of my work, which is mainly 3-D models of designs and technical drawings. However these things are technically the property of company A. Also I don't want...
Hi everyone. I'm a senior undergrad and about to obtain a bachelors in physics from a top US university. I specialized in solid state physics and am doing my undergrad honors thesis in graphene synthesis and characterization. I want to eventually work in the semiconductor industry or with...
Hi. I'm planning on doing a double major with psychology and mathematics.
My parents are opposed to this, and they think that I should major in psychology and do premed. They are doctors and all their doctor friends are employed and having a good life in general. The only people that they know...
For those who have worked in oil companies or finance companies as coders, are your work over there have more emphasize on algorithm design/analysis or class/library creation/maintenance? Forgive me if this is a stupid question as I don't have much experience in writing codes. And I understand...
I come across a handful of companies which hire physics grads who do not have a job portal on their website. Does anyone have any experience applying at these types of companies? Does it generally mean they aren't hiring, or do not hire in this manner (perhaps they only recruit)? Would it be...
hey, i am a undergraduate student earning a degree in physics. I am a little unsure as to whether going immediately to grad school, or trying to get a job with a BS in physics will benefit me more when eventually attempting to pursue a career in physics. i understand that the physics careers are...
So I would like to do an MS in medical physics from a CAMPEP accredited program. Ultimately, I would want a PhD in medical physics. I currently have a job that I obtained with my electrical engineering degree in the automotive industry. I also have 50K in student loans from undergrad. I...
Hi,
Prospective physics undergraduate. Interested in topics of applied mechanics - fluids, dynamical systems, biomechanics, etc. "How fish swim?" or "How bubbles go pop?" are questions I find myself interested in. Not saying I don't like fundamental physics, just that I am interested in such...
Long time reader, first time poster here!
Scroll down for actual question, here's some back story:
Within the coming days/weeks I'll send in my university applications here in Sweden but I have yet to decide what subject to choose. This time last year I applied for a 3-year bachelor's...
I'm initially doing PhD programs in Science Education, but because of funding problems, the department decided to let go a couple of students. I was unfortunate as the department has decided to stop funding my PhD.
Not all was lost, though. I'm now doing Master in Physics, and almost...
I would be so grateful to get the prospective of some people currently working, specifically research - or even grad students.
I work in a totally different profession and I am considering studying physics on the side (who know what it might lead to). I wanted to hear alittle about the...
Right now I'm in my junior year working on an accounting degree, but I'm finding this clearly isn't my passion. I'll still finish for the degree because I believe it has value, but I plan to also minor in math and then apply to a masters in math program.
I've had a lot of questions about the...
I am going to be graduating in May with my BS in Mech Engineering. Next week I have an interview for a job after graduation. For people who have been on engineering interviews or have given them is there anything you would want to tell someone that has never gone on one. Also I have a few...
I'm having a hard time assessing the reality of job prospects in quantum computing research. The research seems mostly limited to schools I wouldn't dream of getting into and the companies pursing the technology seem limited as well.
I'm currently undeclared and taking the basic math...
Im currently in school pursuing a bs in mechanical engineering with an aerospace concentration, and after wanting to obtain my masters in aerospace engineering. Is there anything I can do while in school that would help my resume look better when finding internships, or a job after graduation? I...
Ok, maybe not actuator.. I need to decide between two types of solenoids? Not 100% on what they are called but i'll try to get the gist of it across.
I want to be able to be able to build a system where a piston strikes a mechanism in a linear motion, and I am not sure if air or electric ones...
Hello everyone,
I need some help, which I would be very grateful for.
My local council, here in the UK, are looking to employ someone who they will train, as well as send the successful candidate to a local college/university to gain HNC level in Information Communications Technology. This is...
Hello, I am new here. I had a question regarding jobs and physics. I read the book Death by Black Hole by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and I was highly intrigued at the topics mentioned, enough to proselytize me into wanting to be a physicist in the field of Astrophysics. That was about a year ago. I...
Hey Guys.
Long time lurker here :P
I have a question about PhD titles.
I am a mathematician. I did my undergraduate degree (BSc) in Mathematics and my postgraduate degree (MSc) in Applied Mathematics, i am now looking at doing a PhD. I found an interesting PhD in next generation...
I originally wanted to major in chemical engineering, but I really like math more and I'm afraid I won't like my job as a chemical engineer even though I'm very good at the subjects so far.
Is an applied mathematics major still as viable as an engineering field (which I hear is almost a...
I've read many job postings at several DoE national labs in the United States, especially those dealing with Nuclear Science and Technology. Most of the postings state that they require someone with either a Nuclear Engineering or (Nuclear) Physics degree (or equivalent...I'm guessing some kind...

I've posted here before regarding wtf to do about education. I've found the perfect thing... a preperatory course that sets me up to study physics... and it's FREE! It's a night course so I can still work full time. But I want to work somewhere that I can gain additional...
I'm going to finish my undergrad in about 3 semesters, and I've come to realize through school and internships that if I have to do any programmming for a full-time job upon graduation, I will go insane. So my question is this, and the answer may be a simple 'no, that's ridiculous'. Are there...
Hey guys so I'm going to be graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering this May and I'm now starting the whole job search. How do you know what you want to do with your life? It's a very daunting question to me and, frankly, scares the hell out of me. When looking for your first job do...
I don't mind doing either. I think both of them are interesting and would be enjoyable but which one has a better chance of getting a job in the future?
Hey guys, I'm sure this has been covered somewhere on the forum before, but I searched several times and could not find the thread(s), so I'm asking again.
How do the job prospects look for physics students, at both the undergraduate, and the graduate level. I'm having a hard time finding...
