A job, employment, work or occupation, is a person's role in society. More specifically, a job is an activity, often regular and often performed in exchange for payment ("for a living"). Many people have multiple jobs (e.g., parent, homemaker, and employee). A person can begin a job by becoming an employee, volunteering, starting a business, or becoming a parent. The duration of a job may range from temporary (e.g., hourly odd jobs) to a lifetime (e.g., judges).
An activity that requires a person's mental or physical effort is work (as in "a day's work"). If a person is trained for a certain type of job, they may have a profession. Typically, a job would be a subset of someone's career. The two may differ in that one usually retires from their career, versus resignation or termination from a job.
I want to go into nanotechnology but also keep my options open for employment purposes when I graduate.
At the moment I'm Chemistry & Material Science double major and I thought that'd be a good combo however at the moment I'm thinking, would MatSci for a B.S be oddly too specific for a B.S...
Hello everyone. I am a recently graduated high school and community college student that will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to major in Aerospace Engineering. I am unable to decide on which path in this major (Aeronautical or Astronautical) I should go upon. I enjoy aviation...
I am a Junior in my school's Computer Engineering curriculum, and am thoroughly enjoying it. Since CpE programs vary enormously, http://ece.okstate.edu/sites/default/files/files/images/udgfl_2012_2013CE.pdf for reference. I have added a few courses (actually, 26 credits of courses) for a...
I just got my BS in Physics from Arizona State University (transferred from UC Irvine in CA after decided I didn't want to pursue biology major there and came back to AZ to live with family and work and pursue physics because I like it)
I graduated yesterday and have a fire burning inside me...
Hello,
I currently hold a B.S. in Physics with a minor in Mathematics, but personally felt that to be more prepared for a job in industry, I would need to obtain a Master's degree, so I went through the whole graduate school application process, got into graduate school, and just recently...
I don't know what I should major in, to keep it brief I've already took a year of calc, chemistry, a semester of ordinary diff eq, and physics.
Right now I am in generic engineering and can branch out to electrical, industrial, bio medical, or mechanical or possibly transfer to another uni...
Ive applied to over 20 positions with no luck. I have a 2.8 I am graduating in may with a bachelor degree in physics, i spent last summer in Taiwan doing bio physics research, i doubled up on physics research classes focusing on electrical engineering and nuclear physics. I worked for the last...
BBC had video clip of a worker presumably weakening a tall smoke stack. Looks somewhat dangerous. See,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaR4cjqJ3Is#t=21
Why weaken it? Why not just use explosives?
So I was just looking at graduate EE specializations and found some that interests me. I was just wondering which ones would have the best job markets.
Electronics Circuits & Systems: Analog Circuits or Digital Circuits
Power Electronics & Power Systems: Power Semiconductor Devices, Power...
Will it be easier to find a job as a Math professor in future years or harder? I've always wanted to be a Math professor, but recently it seems as if there are more PhDs than academia spots...
There is a lot of discussion about how Physics gives you valuable skills, and also a lot of discussion of how these skills are somewhat general and hence need to be 'sold' and that employers are often looking for specific skills making it hard for a physicist to be considered. After reviewing...
I am looking for a job, any job. Fortunately, I will be starting graduate school in the fall. I have already graduated with a BSc however and want to make the best of my time until it starts, saving at least some modest amount that'll cover for the eventual travel and first month(s) of living...
Math jobs tend to be ones that you have to dig for more. Not just a matter of getting the degree and picking up employable skills. Stuff like networking and internships are also helpful for getting your foot in the door.
Looking at some job postings might help get a feel for it. Usually...
I've been looking at graduate programs for Health Physics because I realized that I might not want a PhD but also want to be employable with a Physics degree. Usually people want a Certified Health Physicist but to be able to take the exam for certification, you need at least 6 years experience...
1. A’s rate of doing work is three times that of B. On a given day A and B work together for 4 hours; then B is called away and A finishes the rest of the job in 2 hours. How long would it take B to do the complete job alone?
if I let x = B's rate of work and 3x...
What can I, as an undergraduate engineering student, do to increase my chances of being able to get into a R&D job? I'm interested in working in the medical devices or biotechnology industry.
Besides doing undergraduate research, what else can I do?
Hi guys,
I wonder in the R&D department of companies like Google, IBM, Sony, ... Do they allow their employees to use the internet when working?
Some people argue that: because of the confidential requirements, these companies often prohibit internet in their R&D department. However, I...
If a worker can wash all the glass windows of a building in 9 days, what part of the job can
said workers finish in 6 days?1. ¼

let me start out with some back ground information, I used to have a bit of knowledge of EE and programing but became schizo and lost most of it. it took a while but now I realize i'll never be able to do the things I used too. but I've been getting back into programming (just vb.net so far...
Hello!
I'm looking into getting an electrical engineering degree. I understand that there is a very wide variety of electrical engineers, located all over the world, but my questions are a little more specific. I noticed there's a demand for electrical engineers in Texas and surrounding...
I'm a recent Masters graduate and I'm at the beginning of my professional career. I've sent out a few dozen applications and done a few interviews, mostly for programming jobs.
I have a Masters in Physics (I guess I can say that Astrophysics was my major) and another one in Geophysics...
I'm about a semester away from graduating with a B.S. in Physics. While I have beome proficient in doing textbook problems and taking exams related to introductory classical physics and QM, as well as in pretty basic mathematical techniques (calculus, lin. algebra), I feel utterly unprepared to...
Here's the abridged version; I'm young, 18. I've recently found the true value of education and the amazing world of learning. Problem is, I may be too late. I want to pursue a degree in physics and eventually have a stable job and life. During my pre-17 years I accumulated 3 drug charges...
Hi all,
I'll be graduating with a masters in electrical engineering from Ireland at the end of next year. I am hoping to do a years work (maybe more) in the states immediately after this. I was just wondering if many of you who work over there have had people from abroad coming over to work...
Hello all!
I'm thinking of getting a B.S. In Astrophysics or Physics and I was wondering what kind of jobs they're applicable to. Are Masters or PhD programs a must?
Thanks in advance for any responses,
Nassa
Among 15 male applicants for a job, 9 have wives. If 3 of the males are randomly chosen for consideration, find the probability that:
a) none have wives
b) only 1 has a wife
c) 2 have wives
d) all 3 have wives

Hello,
I will be applying for re-entry to my university to complete my Physics BS in the Fall (expected graduation in Fall 2014). I have 2 summers research (in EE), 3 years machining experience and 2 physics labs classes. Has anyone been in a similar predicament? I plan to apply to as many tech...
Backstory. Graduated March of this year. Typical "jack of all trades" Mathematics major: I know basic probability, programming fundamentals, good logical-analytical skills, did data analysis for an esoteric research project for the Computational Neuroscience Grad Dept, but of course I'm not...
Hi,
I was wondering how is the job market now a day for mathematician?
How is it for people who studied pure math instead of applied math?
I did found some information on google, but I wanted to ask anyway!
Thanks
Hi All,
I was wondering when those of you out there in industry felt was a good time to start a job hunt after ones PhD. I myself started about 10 months early and found that the vast majority of jobs would tell me that they were looking for someone to start in January or "as soon as...
Hey guys,
So I have a little bit of a moral dilemma I would like some input on. I graduate from undergrad in December of this year. Back in July, I was given an offer from a defense contractor before I had applied there (I was an intern) and had to give my decision in 6 days. Without any...
I'm a math major currently in calc 3, and I'm also taking my first ever physics class. I've always had a very strong interest in physics from pop-sci books and Feynman's lectures, and I fantasized about doing some work in physics, possibly even changing majors. The problem I find myself having...
I am a senior physics major. I am going to be applying to some grad schools over these next few months but it has me thinking that I really have only a few ideas about what i want out of school. I am so far going to be applying for an ms in medical physics at san diego state (CAMPEP certified)...
Hello Physics Forum,
I just wanted to hear from some experienced Electrical Engineers on how much of the material covered in school are actually used in a real job. I am currently a junior in EE and have heard mixed responses from my professors pertaining to the issue. To make it less broad...
What do you guys believe the future will bring for engineers and computer scientists in general?
What specialization do you think offers the most safety in terms of job security?
How about this claim, there is a purported shortage of STEM graduates but this is false and that this is...
Greetings, everyone.
First off, sorry for my English, especially some of the terminology, as I am not that acquainted with it yet.
I am a second year student in Physics (bachelors) and I've been thinking about my future and what I will specialize in as well as make the bachelors thesis. So I...
I have spent the first five years of my career as a mechanical engineer working for a relatively large engineering company. The company gives me quite a bit of personal freedom, including flex time and generous amounts of vacation. The pay is relatively good and I'm treated well by my peers and...
Let's say that I graduate in computer engineering and my first job is non-technical & unrelated.
How hard would it be to get back into your field if you spend 6 years with your first non-technical job?
I'm doing my masters in engineering, and I have a job interview tomorrow. They've asked me to prepare a presentation of my research for the interview. The thing is, the PhD student I've been working with has asked me not to share the information with anyone else since not all of it has been...

Hello,
I've come to the point where I realize: I'm supposed to teach. I've tutored for years, taught small groups, etc. Also, I want the summer to pursue my other interests. I don't want to do research or anything; just teach.
I was just curious as to how competitive these jobs are...
Are there any low level (B.S. Physics) jobs out there that pay well? I'm split between Geology and Physics and I just learned that the job prospects for a B.S. in Geology are bad. My goal is to get a job as soon as possible, regardless of my major, and then means I am not interested in spending...
A lot of places like national labs list that they're interested in hiring math majors as interns, but I'm having some trouble finding what sort of things they would do. I can think of really vague ideas like modelling things using computers, but otherwise I'm pretty confused. Does anyone know...
A while ago, I posted a thread about my plans to pursue a dual degree in physics and chemical engineering. Now, I haven't changed my mind about the dual degree and the general educational route I want to take. But I recently changed my mind about being a petroleum engineer, and decided I'd...
