A job, employment, work or occupation, is a person's role in society. More specifically, a job is an activity, often regular and often performed in exchange for payment ("for a living"). Many people have multiple jobs (e.g., parent, homemaker, and employee). A person can begin a job by becoming an employee, volunteering, starting a business, or becoming a parent. The duration of a job may range from temporary (e.g., hourly odd jobs) to a lifetime (e.g., judges).
An activity that requires a person's mental or physical effort is work (as in "a day's work"). If a person is trained for a certain type of job, they may have a profession. Typically, a job would be a subset of someone's career. The two may differ in that one usually retires from their career, versus resignation or termination from a job.
Hello,
my Italian company is looking for a person with a physics degree or equivalent (at least master of science), skilled and experienced in optoelectronics, in particular in communications applications. Can you suggest me where can I find this kind of profile? Which website can be used for...
I was just looking at graduate programs in computational science. I understand that it's a broad term that encompasses a wide variety of fields. Right now I'm an undergraduate in electrical engineering, and I plan on going to graduate school. The computational science programs caught my eye...
I recently got in contact with a former colleague and has offered me to join her in South Carolina. I have been teaching in one of the middle schools in our state for around 5 years now. I am really considering the offer however the relocation makes me nervous. What it is like to live in South...

Hey Everyone,
I am asking this question with someone else in mind. I am still in my early twenties.
There are many people with years of experience who for some reason might get laid off. Let's say that the company is relocating and dealing with money issues. Why is it that they would rather...
Hi everyone, I graduated in May of 2014 with a BS in Astrophysics and just landed a job with a major university as a physics lab assistant. As part of the position I will give a 15-20 minute lecture to undergrad students regarding what they are doing in the lab that day. I have no experience...
Hey everybody reading, this is my second thread! I must say this is a great website, I've read posts on it for help with some physics questions I've had in the Grade 12 physics course I am taking.
Just two weeks ago, I applied to universities in Ontario, more specifically Laurentian University...
Hi, I have a question: Would I be able to find a job as a an engineer if I only have an associate's degree?
I'm currently attending a community college and hopefully in one year I'll graduate with an associate's degree in Engineering Science.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
At the moment, I am a physics major and also putting a lot of emphasis on math. I am in my second year of undergrad at the moment. While my "dream" goal does include going into a PhD for physics, I do realize it's a long and demanding journey, so I have also been looking at actuary related jobs...
I know it's some kind of encoding that can be turned into a phone # and/or email address, but what encoding is it? (By the way, I'm not going to apply for it. You're not helping me cheat or anything. I'm just curious.)
First post in the forums. Looking forward to some great conversations.
I took my ultimate exam for an A.A.S. in Instrumentation Technology, Electronics, and Bio-medical Equipment Repair Technology. I have an internship at a hospital SUPPOSEDLY scheduled to start in a month.
I have plans to...
I've got a technical job interview tomorrow for a robotics related position. I have asked to prepare for questions as follows.

I don't know...it must be that I'm too much of a free spirit to work for someone else.
I'm thinking, after I graduate with my mathematics BS, I would like to get a masters. After that, maybe I'll start my own consulting firm.
Of course, I will get volunteer/unpaid experience along the way...
I am a bit frustrated with my current job search and I was wondering if people at PF could give some guidance. I am a doctoral graduate in Electrical Engineering from a low ranked university (~ 180 US News overall ranking). Although a EE doctorate most of my work was in materials...
Is anyone familiar with the difference in pay for high school teachers vs. applying your skills in private sector workforce?
For instance, are there tax benefits that teachers receive that can be quantified vs. those of say some analyst (if they make the same pay)?
What about pensions? Are...
i have deep interest in electrical and electronics components since i am small. so , i am thinking of studying E&E engineering. but , i have very little exposure to this field.
Can someone share what the E&E guys do?
well,, i still have one and a half year to go,, so you might think that this is a little bit early but this is really a concern for me,, i really don't know what should i do after i graduate,,, I'm majoring in physics and I'm going to be honest I SUCK AT TEACHING ! I'm considering having masters...
So I'm going to be eligible to teach high school students sooner rather than later, and I have a few questions on how to round out my undergrad to go into the job market with the best chances of getting to teach the classes I want. Bear in mind I'm not limited to one city or state so I already...
Hello, I'm Schoeredinger's cat. After escaping that box, I went looking for a job elsewhere (can you blame me?).
I have a PhD in physics from Cambridge (impressive for a cat, no?), where I deposited and studied magnetic metals and semiconductors thin films. I got a couple of postdocs that led...

I would like to get your opinion on moving into programming. Basically, I want job security and the ability to work just about anywhere there are jobs. I've considered taking a job as a programmer, but I would like to know what you suspect the job prospects are for such position? From...
Hello all,
I am currently a sophomore enrolled at a state university, with generally good STEM education (regularly ranked top 50 in the US in engineering, cs, physics, astronomy, etc). I am a Physics major CS minor at this particular moment, mainly because I seem to particularly enjoy physics...
What would the career prospects be for someone who does a Ph. D. in Mathematics with a research focus in partial differential equations? Assuming you got some computer skills along the way like parallel computing, programming, etc? Sure, you could become a professor but most people don't make...
Hi all,
I was doing HEP-EXP in a US institution, got MSc and started Phd. However in the middle of it I decided that job prospects weren't good as far as tenure track positions are concerned and I found a job as a quantitative analyst in a hedge fund. I work there for the past 18 months.
But...
Im trying to figure out if I want to go to grad school or to try and find a job. Which is more stressful grad school or working in industry in a stem field. obviously it will be very hard to find a job in stem. would it be better to work in industry and gain experience or go to grad school?

How's the current job market for Applied Physics? Anyone with an applied physics degree(BS, MS, PhD) on here want to comment?
It seems from reading some of the posts in this sub-forum that the overall job market for pure physics or mathematics isn't very good and people are having to apply to...
Hello everyone. Looks like you have a great community here that I would like to be a part of. A little background on me: I hated high school and did no do well academically although I always had an interest in science. Got out of school and floated around various jobs while my passion for...
I've been in my current position for about 1.5 years. I've been taking on more and more responsibilities and i feel like nobody cares/has the time to care.
The other day my manager emailed me out of nowhere a "success" award for "team efforts". The next day in our overall larger team meeting...

I found this article online that I thought may be of interest to us older job seekers:
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/making-sense/ask-the-headhunter-why-cant-this-former-ceo-get-a-job/
The gist of it is that the employment system is broken and that you must side-step it and do more than just...
Hi,
I'm hoping some of you could provide me with information about actuarial and statistics work. I like a diverse range of problems and creative solutions. Other fields I'm interested in are engineering and computing. I like visualization and am interested in using computation to model real...
The situation:
