I'm pretty sure the detector is optimized for the type of neutrino and energy range it is looking for. Further, the source doesn't produce low energy neutrinos (either at all, or in more than vanishing amounts). Finally, neutrino reaction cross section is roughly proportional to neutrino energy, so even if you addressed the prior issues, you would have many fewer observations, with that much worse error issues. For supernova energy levels, similar neutrino production numbers, you would be expecting a couple of dozen events instead of 16,000.
