Cell is a multi-core microprocessor microarchitecture that combines a general-purpose PowerPC core of modest performance with streamlined coprocessing elements which greatly accelerate multimedia and vector processing applications, as well as many other forms of dedicated computation. It was developed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM, an alliance known as "STI". The architectural design and first implementation were carried out at the STI Design Center in Austin, Texas over a four-year period beginning March 2001 on a budget reported by Sony as approaching US$400 million. Cell is shorthand for Cell Broadband Engine Architecture, commonly abbreviated CBEA in full or Cell BE in part.
The first major commercial application of Cell was in Sony's PlayStation 3 game console, released in 2006. In May 2008, the Cell-based IBM Roadrunner supercomputer became the first TOP500 LINPACK sustained 1.0 petaflops system. Mercury Computer Systems also developed designs based on the Cell.
The Cell architecture includes a memory coherence architecture that emphasizes power efficiency, prioritizes bandwidth over low latency, and favors peak computational throughput over simplicity of program code. For these reasons, Cell is widely regarded as a challenging environment for software development. IBM provides a Linux-based development platform to help developers program for Cell chips.
This is a bit unrelated, but I think this should go in this section here. You are all pretty savvy on this forum, so I'm wondering if you all know of any cell phones which allow you to record entire conversations?
ok... here is something interesting. I take it most of you haven't heard, but the most populated state in australia (New South Wales) has just passed a bill (act of parliament) through the lower house to legalise stem cell research in the state. Do you agree or disagree with this...
Hey,
I recently read that they made a 40% efficient solar cell... what does this actually mean? How do they calculate this efficiency... and how much power do these cells actually produce? and what's with the mono and poly crystalline titles that they get? what does that mean??
Any info...
I need help thinking of ideas for slides. I have "How it works", "benefits", "challenges", "Physics behind it", "Hydrogen vehicles", "Why Hydrogen", "What is a fuel cell", "Uses", "efficiency", "Fuel cell configurations". I can't think of anything else.
1. Homework Statement
I have a class in grade nine geography and as our final assignment we have to pick a topic on things that effect Canada. I picked stem cell research, got my info, but I have no idea of what to make the model. I tried thinking of everything, I'm in academic and for me to...
Hello, I must first say that I think this is an excellent forum, I have found some usefull info in the past.(thanks)
The question I have today is about loadcells, I am working in my companys R&D department I am trying to set up a pair of load cells to measure tension. The load cells I am...

All I'm trying to do is translate the cell diagram below into a into a an equation so I can determine which is the anode and which is the cathode. Here is the cell diagram. I know how to balance it, I just want to make sure I'm putting reactants and products on their...
i read about a month ago that cell phone charging is about to be 'revolutionized.' Apparently, cell phones of the near future will have a wireless charging system where you plug a radio transmitter into the wall, and the cell phone receives the signal and uses it to charge it's batteries.
My...
The inner and outer surfaces of a cell membrane carry a negative and positive charge, respectively. Because of these charges, a potential difference of about 0.0730 V exists across the membrane. The thickness of the membrane is 8.22E-9 m. What is the magnitude of the electric field in the...
A while back, I purchased a 38W peltier cell on ebay. It wasn't powerful enough, so I'm looking at something along the lines of a 92W. I noticed, however that my 38W and the 92W have the same dimensions and the same number of junctions. Also, dT of the 92W is only 1 degree C above the 38W...
I want to understand that why does the internal resistance of a cell/battery goes on increasing as the cell gets older.
What happens inside the cell that causes the internal resistance to increase gradually?
Thanks.
Most batteries have a low voltage output like a lead acid +- 2.2V per cell
And carbon + zinc have something like 1.5V and so it goes on.
Can a battery have a high output voltage without putting it in series
Example:
I want a battery with 100V DC output per cell, does that exist or not...
I have this homework question I can't quite figure out. Any help is greatly appreciated.
In direct sunlight, solar cells have a power density of approximately 15 mW/cm2. Suppose a sensor node consumes on average 10mW of power. How large of a solar cell array is needed to meet this...

im meant to design an experiment (at AS level) and perform it to see how the pH can affect beetroot cell membrane permeability. i don't know where to start. anyone have any experiments??
thanks
If the EM waves emitted by a cell phone and a microwave oven have similar frequencies, what does it mean that the waves emitted by the oven contain more energy? I believe that a microwave oven generates about 500 watts, whereas a cell phone generates only about 2 watts. What exactly does that...
These guys dress up like giant cell phones and then attack and destroy other people's cell phones.

I'm confused about the ability of neurons to repair themselves.
My understanding was that most tissue was repaired not by 'mending' individual cells but by creating new cells by cell division (and that most types of neurons don't actually do this) and that cells just became more worn until...
need some help please :)
Had major paper due today, didn't have much time for my physics hw, and now I am stumped on some. Anyone got ideas, I have to turn it in tommorow! Thanks for any help you can give!

My attempts to derive the height as a function of radius of the spheres packing the unit cell have failed. The best attempt so far was to create a diagonal line from the top atom to one of the middle ones. With that distance I thought I could use trig to find the component parallel to the height...
Let's suppose we have a Phonon gas in 1-D then:
- density of states g(k)=A/ \frac{ d\omega (k)}{dk} (i don't remember the value of constant A sorry.. :-p :-p )
- The Schroedinguer equation (NO interaction) would be:
H_TOTAL =\Sum_{i}\frac{P^{2} _{i}}{2M}+ \sum_{i}B\omega ^{2}(k)...
Hi,
I am trying to do coursework on measuring the internal resistance of a solar cell. The light intensity on the solar cell is not going to change so the only thing that can be changed is the resistance as a variable resistor is used. But I am not sure how to find the internal resistance when I...
In my school we are developing and investigating the process of generating electricity by means of an hydrogen fuel cell.
We have started with an aqueous solution of NaCl and connect it to a 12 volt generator. Then, we waited for 3-4 minutes and disconnected it from the generator and connected...
anyone help me out, please.
can anyone tell me the "problems a cell would encouter if this structure ceased to function"?(what would happen, if Golgi apparatus did not exsist)
i recently read in a popular science magizine about a guy inventing a substance that was like a "scafalding" for atoms. that the atoms (gas state) bonded to this structure (assuming this scaffalding is microscopic) making it "semi-solid" i don't know what you would call it. but what if you did...

Good news but I am afraid it will not help the political debate
My Sony Ericsson T200 cell phone is ~4 years old. (I know, vacuum tubes and dial knobs). It is no longer made. Thus, they no longer make the batteries either.
My battery's life has become quite short, lasting only a day or two without use (it used to last all week), so I'd like to replace it...
I just started reading about Donald O. Hebb and his theories about cell assemblies. I am stuck on something really simple. From what I have read, if two neurons have a synaptic connection and they fire simultaneously, then that connection will be strengthened. What I can't understand is this -...
I had to make a galvanic cell for my chemistry class and it was supposed to have a voltage of 2.3 but for some reason it only was .5. My cell was comprised of a iron and aluminim electrode with the respective nitrates.( potassium nitrate salt bridge) it was wondering if anybody knew why it would...

Is it it safe for electronics in physics labs (spectroscopy devices, lasers, AFM, Teraherz microscope) to use:

I thought a cell phone sent messages at the speed of light, but I was told that much of it goes through wires and not the atmosphere. How do wires effect the speed, and does it mostly go through wires?
