A secondary school describes an institution that provides secondary education and also usually includes the building where this takes place. Some secondary schools provide both lower secondary education (age 12 to 15) and upper secondary education (age 15 to 18) i.e. levels 2 and 3 of the ISCED scale, but these can also be provided in separate schools, as in the American middle and high school system. In the UK, elite public schools typically admit pupils between the ages of 13 and 18. UK state schools accommodate pupils between the ages of 11 to 18.
Secondary schools follow on from primary schools and prepare for vocational or tertiary education. Attendance is usually compulsory for students until age 16. The organisations, buildings, and terminology are more or less unique in each country.
im in high school and my grades are okay. I am no einstein, although i have read many books on relativity. I am just not doing well in school, because i get bored and don't do the work. if i do the work, i get good grades, but sometime i forget some equations. my GPA for first semester sophomore...
Hello, I usually just read the threads and watch the lectures on the forums so I haven't really had a reason to sign up until now. Given an academic guidance sub-forum I figured I'd give my question a try.
Did anyone of you find high school boring, but come into your own during college? When...
This thread is intended to give high school students the necessary information to cope with university level mathematics. I find the “who wants to be a mathematician” thread too convoluted to be of use when looking for books, and that it serves college students more than k-12. Nonetheless, it...
I am tutoring a couple of students in high school physics and have for the first time come across the problem of how to teach high school students the basic concepts of relativity. I explained the MM experiment and they found that comparatively easy, but upon getting to time dilation they...
Has anyone taught geometry at the high school level using Euclid's Elements (e.g., http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?lookup=Euc.+toc") as a textbook? Einstein considered the Elements a "holy little geometry book."
Hi,
I'm looking for good textbooks or problem books for a 9 and 10th grade students. Maybe not as difficult as the AMC or IMO level math, but some problems that require some thought rather than just plug and chug formulas. For example, I want to find a good problem set for trig proofs, and...
I teach high school physics and I would like to get maximum mileage out of my Lenz's law experiment/demonstration.
I am going to get the students to drop magnets down a long copper tube to calculate the magnetic force using distance, time etc and making a direct calculation using Fnet=...
I'm a junior in high school just enrolling in the Physics course this year (after failing/dropping AP physics the first few weeks... I'll save that for next year), and I love it. My first two years of high school I moved back and forth from Los Angeles to other cities, so my knowledge of...
For one of my chemistry projects, I have to build a 3D model of urea, with 3 urea molecules bonded to each other (via hydrogen bonding). I was just wondering how you know the shape of the hydrogen bond that takes place?? Ie. for water, the hydrogen bonding makes a tetrahedron shape, what's the...
I am not sure if this is the correct place to post so feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
I would like to ask if anybody here would be willing to tutor me online basically like a teacher/student situation and work through maths. I am achieving high in maths at school but want to advance...

The reaction SO2CL2(g) == SO2(g)+ Cl2(g)
was studied in a 5.00 L container at 100C. Initially, 2.65 mol of Cl2(g) and 4.85 mol of SO2CL2(g) were present in the container. The equilibrium constant is 2.60. Calculate the equilibrium concentrations of the reactant and...
I'm going to be tutoring HS students (junior and senior) in physics soon enough. I need to have a good, comprehensive source of problems. Any suggestions?
I'm planning to go into medical field, so I'm thinking a science major right? Right now I am in year 3 high school. Math isn't my greatest but I must say I'm decent but in science(I've only take chem 11) I think I'm above average. Now year 4 is quite near (after this summer) and these are my...
Let me start by giving a bit of background information about myself: I'm 24 in April. I'm a business student. When I first started college, I chose business because I really had no idea what to do and business was the route I took for safety. Flash forward to the present, where I've been in...
So this summer I'm thinking about taking some community college classes so my summer isn't a total waste. I've taken precalc, ap physics b, and ap chemistry. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas of which classes would be mo

Since some of you are high school students and may be contemplating it, I just wanted to share my opinion - don't do it unless the grades are perfect! If I could go back and change anything about high school, it would be NOT doing this. I took a bunch of classes in 11th grade and got credit from...
Besides the PE teacher.
I want to major in Engineering or Physics, and I plan on applying to Cornell University. Does it matter which teacher I choose (e.g., precal teacher vs. English teacher)?
Should I just stick to the math/science teachers since it'll show I'm more math/science...
I'm studying pure maths/numb theory for the first time (independantly, and from a shallow, brief-ish book with no given solutions, so i have no one else to ask :P ). I just started a day or two ago. The book leaves Induction till a little later, so this should be proved directly, or maybe by...
Homework Statement
x1000 = x(2x)500-2998x2
Okay. This is difficult. It is easy to notice that the solutions are x=0 and x=2 but how do you prove that? I have tried to resolve it in different ways with no luck at all. Maybe I haven´t noticed something. Any ideas? This is Finnish final...
hi I am new here, but I signed up to ask this question. I was looking at a high school physics exam from last june and one of the questions seems to me like it's unfair. I think they didn't give enough information to solve the problem. here it is;

My department is seeking some leads for a good high school physics text that can be used for our AP Physics students. We are looking for something therefore that would be Calculus based. Do any of you have any good leads on this topic?
Thank you!

For this year's science fair, I was thinking of replicating the Miller-Urey experiment, using a mixture of gases found on other planets, to determine which one has the most life potential.
The problem is getting started.
I would really appreciate some help on materials, methods, and building...

Bumper Project: Need help with equations used.
I was recently assigned this project for my honors physics class. I don't want any help with the design itself of the bumper I was just wondering if I could have help identifying different equations that would apply to this.1. Problem Statement...
Okay so I really, really liked Physics pre-ap last year. We had a great teacher, and I understood everything. Fast forward a year later, and that teacher left, and the new AP teacher is okay. He's a great guy, but I can't really grasp the way he teaches. Last year I was in AP Chem, and hated...
Find the derivative of y=(3x+4)^5/(2x^2-3x)^6
Some how the answer is simplified to 3x(6x^2-59x+24)/(2x-3)^7, I don’t know if I just copied it down wrong or I’m doing it incorrectly. Some assistance would be nice.
I changed the equation to y=(3x+4)^5*(2x-3x)^-6 and used the product...
Saturday night was the 40th anniversary reunion for my high school graduating class. I went out of curiosity to see people that I only vaguely remember and who only vaguely remember me. I was a small kid and there were only two other kids that I could wrestle with. Both were there. One of them...
Stuck on this problem.
I think acceleration is about 0.4m/s^2, but having the worst time trying to find direction. I think the sine or cosine law is supposed to be used?? Here's the question:

Hi all
My post-secondary desires have been to study electrical engineering. I think I have the mental capacity (and the rare love of math--> at least rare in my school) to get me through some sort of engineering course in university, and I have always loved... Connecting electronics together...
Hello ya'll, new to these forums but I've been reading around and enjoyed what I've read. Wanted to get some feedback about some classes coming up this semester.
I'm a Sr. high school student, and will taking one class at the HS (AP Bio), and 4 at a college nearby. I took AP Calc BC and...
Throughout my life, I've heard and read many people assert that the jocks in high school (football players, basketball players, and wrestlers more so than other sports, I think) almost invariably wind up having minimum wage, menial labor type of jobs when they go into the real world. And people...
While many in GD know me fairly well, I thought I'd make an introduction here, as next year I'll be taking AP Biology as a high school sophomore and know I'll be here A LOT.
I am looking for a suitable text for a short course that will be taught over a 16 week period. Students will take this nation-wide to compete for cash prizes and a college scholarship. Each year the subject matter is different and this year, it will be nuclear physics and chemistry.
I am...
Due to the suggestion by Crosson, I'm making another thread. Basically, I'm curious what I can do to study physics and anything else I might need in high school.

I have the below question for Summer Physics (basically just taking physics over the summer instead of during the year)
I completed part A by doing Y-component for mee eun is 15sin30 and x-component is 15cos30. For Lokesh I got 20sin50 for the y and 20cos50 for...
Hi, my name is Peter Heuer, I am a high school student and an avid reader of physics forums :)
I have been working with two friends over the last year and a half to build a small cyclotron to enter in a science fair. We have completed our design but are having trouble funding the project...
Next year (senior year) I'm going to take physics, but, quite frankly, I can't wait until then. Summer fast approaches, and I'll have a three month break to allocate my time to studies to 'get ahead' and squelch my lack of education with respect to some subjects. I plan to dedicate an hour or...
High School Student failing pyhsics --- could somebody please helpme w/ my homework?
i am so desperate and i have no idea how to interpret anything let alone be able to solve a problem. help would be very much appreciated. i am an A student with an 58% in this class. i really need the help.
Hi guys.
I need a few equations to complete a table.
I am given numbers for:
Fg (N)
h (m)
Fa (N)
d(m)
and I need to find:
Work Output (J)
Work Input (J)
Effeciency
If anyone has those three equations I could use it would be greatly appreciated.
I have been very bored at my high school. I took the hardest math and physics classes at my high school my freshman year (Calc BC and Physics C:E&M/Mechanics) and I am now a sophomore taking classes at the community college. However, I have pretty much exhausted the courses there. Given my...
I am only a freshman in high school,so i know i have a lot of time to think, but i was thinking about studying physics or astro physics in college. However, I am good at math, but not amazing. This year i am taking geometry, as a sophmore i will take algebra 2, as a junior i will take...
Hey everyone. I’m in high school Physics and I need some help. We are in a unit involving gravity, mass, and radius and heights of Earth. Here are some equations and givens we have to help:
M1g= (Gm1m2)/r^2
G= 6.67 x 10^-11
R= 6.38 x 10^6
V= Square root of (Gmp/r)
T= Square root of...
So, I am a sophomore at a Math/Science Magnet school and I am considering applying to colleges a year early and relinquishing my right to obtain a high school diploma. I scored 2300+ on the SAT I. I also have 800s on the necessary SAT IIs, so the standardized testing crap is out of the way. I...
How much does high school contest skill improve your grades in university math courses? Currently I find that all the contest tricks that I've learned play almost no role in my university courses, and studying my textbooks is all that matters now. Any clever thinking I had for those contests...
