A secondary school describes an institution that provides secondary education and also usually includes the building where this takes place. Some secondary schools provide both lower secondary education (age 12 to 15) and upper secondary education (age 15 to 18) i.e. levels 2 and 3 of the ISCED scale, but these can also be provided in separate schools, as in the American middle and high school system. In the UK, elite public schools typically admit pupils between the ages of 13 and 18. UK state schools accommodate pupils between the ages of 11 to 18.
Secondary schools follow on from primary schools and prepare for vocational or tertiary education. Attendance is usually compulsory for students until age 16. The organisations, buildings, and terminology are more or less unique in each country.

I am currently enrolled in Calculus AB and am going to take the Calculus BC exam. I taught myself most topics in single variable calc over the summer so I am very confident that I can pass the BC exam.
Provided I do, I would have the opportunity the take Calc III (and possibly partial diff...
I've read up a little bit about Abstract Algebra and it seems like a really interesting subject. A university near me will offer an intro class in it next semester. Trouble is, the university requires Calc III as a prerequisite for the course. I'm taking AP Calc right now at school, but it...
Hi, this is my first time using this forum, so i have no idea if this is even the correct place to be asking for help. I have a problem with my High School Higher Physics Homework. The question is as follow :
Homework Statement During one run, a car and passengers of mass 800kg are released...
What can you do after an actual failure in one's freshman year (or almost all of them)? My younger brother had some trouble adjusting to high school and while this isn't the place to get into why, the long story short is that he really butchered his freshman year academically. He's not slow by...
a stone is dropped from a 75m building. when this stone has dropped 15m, a second stone is thrown downaward with an initial velocity such that the two stones hit the ground at the same time. what was the initial velocity of the second stone?
please use kinematic equations. that is all i know...
I'm warning you, this might be a long read.
I'm a senior in high school, and I've had a history of occasionally being subpar in math, but I've always been a bit of a scientific thinker and am fascinated by space.
The majors I'm primarily interested in fall into Biology, Physics...
Don't bite my head off here right away, I'm only a high school student. I was thinking about the vacuum of space, and to me it just seems odd that there's nothing there. If there was really nothing there, would it really exist? Absolute zero does not exist, there's no space, time or anything...
Hi all. First off, don't bother wasting your time reading this if you have never in your life considered medicine as a career choice. In this case, please read and answer my questions that are bolded at the bottom.
I am currently a high school senior and am currently in the process of...

Hi. I'm 33, a librarian, and in the past few years I've developed a real interest in physics - it started out by trying to fill in gaps in my knowledge about the physical world and, well, as I read more popular science books about physics I'm realizing it's something I'd like more of an in-depth...
Hello,
I am new to this forum and to research itself. I am a high school students that wants to do a physics research project to put on my college resume and to prepare myself for college curriculum. Right now I am a student pilot so i was thinking of doing something with aerodynamics or...
First I just want to say I am new to these forums and do not know were this should be posted so if there is another forum that this would be better suited for please let me know.
But actually on topic now I am a high school senior this year and we have a senior project that I have to do and I...
Why is calculus only an elective (optional) course in high school? If it is a requirement in college, then why aren't college-bound high school graduates brought up to speed about the much more advanced mathematics they will learn in college? Why aren't there any calculus questions on the math...
Hello everyone, I come to these forums from time to time, and I am glad to see a forum dedicated to academics such as you all are. If it wouldn't be too bothersome, I just wanted to see what advice I could get about my senior year of high school.
I am currently sitting with almost all my...
hi
Just as the title say, please give me good advice
Because I feel really stupid to want to become a theoretical physicist when my parents want me to become doctor
I am not from a rich family but I really love math and physics
all this summer I have been studying first year university...
I'm not sure this is the correct forum. Please direct me to the correct forum on this site or a different forum site if needed.
I am teaching my own son physics. He is a senior. This is not an AP course. I am using the Giancoli 5th edition for problems. He is really struggling with the...
Hi everyone. This is my first post so if this is the wrong section, I'm sorry.
Skip to bottom for the basic questions; stay and read for lots of background info.
Ok so I am a junior in high school. I have always found school easy, but I was verrry lazy and I hated my teachers my 9th and 10th...
Hi,
I am interested in letting high school students explore the effect of various conditions on the degree to which a crystallizing substance picks up impurities. (This is to establish groundwork for understanding how inclusions in zeolites are used as indicators conditions in the early...
My favorite things to learn about or read about is astronomy, physics, and cosmology. Until school starts up again, which i will be taking Pre Calc and AP physics and aerospace engineering, I was wondering if there's anything i can do now while i have nothing to do and am really bored?? I am...
Hey, I can't decide on what I should go to university for after high school. I enjoy maths and sciences, but I also enjoy the human body (eg. kinesiology). I guess what I'm asking is what kind of jobs could I get in maths or sciences, and possibly what degree that would be if possible. Also, I'm...
Education down here consists of 13 years of schooling and often, after the first five years of secondary school (post GCSE/iGCSE/O-Level), students choose to complete the remaining two years at a separate institution. My case is a little different. I started year 12 at the same school but due to...
So I'm trying to get ahead of the class for next year and I've started reading this physics book, now I've come along to work and I'm slightly confused on what's happening.

So, I got a C in my Spanish 3H class in high school and I heard that it was one of the courses that gives you UC credit.
I passed the class so I can still graduate with the 3 year requirement, and I'm not sure if I'll need a language class later on in college.
I got into the class at a...
Hi,
I'm in high school and have been given an assignment regarding heat, which is a term I don't fully understand mainly
because any definition I have come across makes use of the term Energy. This leads me to my question:
What is energy?
I know of the existence of the thread 'What is...
I'm a going to be a senior in high school next. I'm planning to go to Dental School. One the requirements is one year of Physics not counting AP credit. What would be better to the admissions office? To take the AP test in high school, and get around a B in Physics C or get a A in Physics B in...
Hello everyone, I know that I've been asking a lot of questions lately and I am very thankful for the advice given to me thus far on this board. I am currently in running start right now and have been taking a full time college load for the last year at my community college but looking back at...
Hello PhysicsForums,
My previous posts here do a rather good job at illustrating my indecisiveness. Here's some background:
I started uni in the fall of 2010. After applying to maths programs at many Canadian universities, and Economics at Norwegian ones, my choice fell on Economics at the...
I recently read the book "A Brief History of Time"by Stephen Hawking, and in it he described the concept of imaginary time.
It had something to do with the squares of numbers being equal to negative numbers, which were called imaginary numbers. Also, he mentioned being able to travel in...
These are the requirements for the grad school which I want to go to.
I'm a high school student at the moment.

I am going to be a senior in high school this upcoming 2011-2012 school year. I have finished AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, and AP Calculus BC. I refuse to take AP Biology, so I decided to take up a capstone project. My capstone is going to revolve around special relativity and possibly some...
Of couse this is unlikely to happen to me but
I was just curious that,
If a high school student genious or child prodigy like Jacob Barnett
discovered a pattern of prime numbers,
is (s)he allowed to submit his/her work to academia?

I remember the day when my school asked me Academic or Applied and just like most teens they want to take the easy way. This question really didn't phase me until I got to my near completion of High School then say what's next? you do tons of research, apply, wait, and this is where is really...
Cam someone help me out please -- I teach school to incarcerated students at a county facility. My background is in liberal arts and education -- not physical science -- but I am getting there. I am taking a course on physics and astronomy and am reading up on QP.
WHat I am looking to do is...
I am in high school, currently studying grade 12 Physics. Other subjects I am taking are Chemistry, Biology, Calculus I, English, History. Out of all these subjects, I find that I have to study for Physics the most. It is a hard class. The exams seem to be much much harder than the homework and...
From what I understand, when a person attends post-secondary education either at a university or community college, they are required to partake in a "core curriculum" on top of their major and minor. This curriculum consists of English, history, science, and math. Just like in high school.
How...

Hi, I'm a high school student...I was wondering if anyone could help me find a college where I'd be able to take a physics course over the summer (it doesn't matter if it's for credit or not). I live in Massachusetts, and would prefer a program in New England. If there are any pre-AP or SAT II...
High School senior confused in life... :(

I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to which career path I should take? I am interested astronautical engineering, because of my love of space and designing spacecraft seems incredibly interesting and fun... It would be a...
Hey there! My name is Luke and I got my bachelors in BS Physics last year (along with a math minor). I am enrolled in grad school but I'm starting to feel it might not be for me. So I'm trying to think of career alternatives. What sounds very interesting and rewarding is becoming a high...
I thought that the high school debate topic for 2011-2012 would be fun to share. Any thoughts on how space exploration and development of space can be implemented is appreciated.

I'm currently a high school freshman in NYC and was wondering what classes I should focus on in school and what programs are available in astrophysics, cosmology, and or relating to it for someone my age?
Thanks so much.
So, the point is this thread is to make it more probable that college freshman will not crash and burn. I'm a senior in high school myself, so I obviously have a personal interest in this topic and, also obvious, haven't yet had a college experience; so feel free to correct anything I write...
I REALLY want to try for an internship this summer with something to do with physics, and I think I made a thread about this already, but how should I actually do this? Should I bring up that I'm currently auditing an intro to QM class at so and so university, or keep that out? Or should I just...
I'm in my first year at junior college now, planning on transferring elsewhere.
I'm pretty sure that I'd like to teach high school (either physics or math). My motivation for this is that good teachers are rare, good physics/math teachers are even rarer (and therefore more valuable?). I'm an...
Hi, I'm an arts student out of Canada looking into information about books suitable for teaching myself basic physics. I have absolutely no recollection of high school mathematics or physics so I'm looking for something to build a strong foundation on. I'm thinking of picking up Physics for...
