A secondary school describes an institution that provides secondary education and also usually includes the building where this takes place. Some secondary schools provide both lower secondary education (age 12 to 15) and upper secondary education (age 15 to 18) i.e. levels 2 and 3 of the ISCED scale, but these can also be provided in separate schools, as in the American middle and high school system. In the UK, elite public schools typically admit pupils between the ages of 13 and 18. UK state schools accommodate pupils between the ages of 11 to 18.
Secondary schools follow on from primary schools and prepare for vocational or tertiary education. Attendance is usually compulsory for students until age 16. The organisations, buildings, and terminology are more or less unique in each country.
Hello all!
I've been instructed to construct a week long Cosmology class for High School Freshman. The class will run from about 8am-3pm everyday (with breaks and lunch or course).
My first step in constructing this class is just to ask you guys what you would want to learn about...
Hi guys I'm Bruce. I'm new to this forum and I 'm currently a high school student. I was wondering if there was any good books( not too advanced) on topics such as astronomy, chemistry, biology and calculus. If you can give me one or two suggestions that will be great.
I am doing precalculus by 'Carl Stitz' and 'Jeff Zeager'. It's a pretty good book. Every tiny thing is touched and explained for a topic. I want a similar book for calculus for high school where every tiny detail is explained because i am learning calculus by myself.
I have always had a keen interest for math and Physics, however I have never had much physics in school. I moved to different schools a lot, and therefore I never had anything else than F=ma and basic electric circuitry. Since my father is a math teacher, I have been able to go through Spivak...
So I am a High school student from Australia and I'm slow when it comes to mathematics (2 Unit) and I'm not doing to well in the tests, I'm getting around 50%.
I was wondering if I should drop to general Maths, which I know isn't recommended for University Physics. The recommended is instead...
Hey, my teacher gave us this scenario and I didn't really understand how he went about doing this. I was wondering if there was someone who could shed some light. Thanks!
You have a new material in front of you titled Material Gamma. You want to get a very rough
approximation as to the...
I tried to keep the thread name as applicable to my question as possible. I'm sure this question has been asked before I apologise in advance I could not find the appropriate answer :) I did not do physics at high school as when I tried to change a sub to physics they told me I was too late...

In high school chemistry, which I am in right now, we are the very simple means by which to balance a chemical reaction and determine the products of a reactions. My question is; is any reaction possible as long as the valence electrons of the reactants equal eight? Obviously the answer is no...
Hey! I'm a Grade 11 (entering Grade 12) high school student living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and I was wondering if I could come here and ask a question on if anyone could give me any advice on what I should do with my life? More specifically, which one of these careers do you think would be...
I'm looking for a book to self-study this summer before my last course of Bachillerato (A Levels or High School in other countries).
My performance in Mathematics has only improved and I've just been given the maximum mark this last term (10/10 or A+). This has motivated me a lot to keep...
Im almost 16 and in 10th grade and I am very interested in biology/human anatomy. But when i was in 9th grade i was homeschooled and it wasnt for me and i ended up procrastinating to the point were i was kicked out in the middle of the second semester (but you need to finish the whole semester...
I am really hoping someone will be able to give some advice on this because this decision is very stressful.

Hello, I am a current freshman in HS. Sophomore year I am registered to double up in math (AP Stat/Precalc) and am taking Honors Programming, the prereq to AP Computer Science at my school. I am also taking Spanish 3 next year, as well, as I took Spanish 1 for HS credit last year in middle...
Okay so I have to do a project that examines whiplash and brain injury in physics. My scenario is a minivan full of 7 people of various masses. This van is at rest and gets struck from behind by a truck going 75 mph. What is a reasonable acceleration for the van after it gets struck? I'm trying...
Hello all,
I am interested in physics and I know that a some amount of calculus is required for high school physics. We don't start calculus until the end of next year i.e end of 11th grade (I have just finished 9th grade), although the level of physics we do is quite high. Can someone...
Hi, I'm currently in high-school and looking to study independently, but am unsure how long I should spend doing this a week. Currently I spend about 35 hours in school per week (9 till 4, Mon to Fri) with about an hour of travel time. Of this time in school about 23 hours is spent in lessons. I...

My question is this: how do I break the chains?
I took honors physics last year and absolutely fell in love. Unfortunately we don't have any Calculus-based physics courses in my school… I've asked some of my teachers for textbooks I could borrow and they've been nice enough to give me some...
As stated in the title I'm wondering if I'd be able to pursue a career in Physics at the age of 16. I'm only asking because it seems like many physicists had taken up a serious interest in science at a young age. Obviously I've taken science related courses throughout my life time but I feel...
Hiya, my name's Raven, and I have a lot of problems with physics. I often have trouble with (you guessed it) MASTERING PHYSICS! I used this site a number of times for homework help prior to joining (primarily because most other sites for physics help are blocked on my school computer), so I...

For a grade 12 physics project we have to stretch a spring along an inclined plane and then let go so that it hits a target. I know the mass of the spring, the angle of the incline, the height of the incline (how high the front of the spring would be off the ground before...
Hello All of the physics lovers out there.
This is Abhinav Vashisht.
I am from India and currently in High school.
Just lookihng forward to present my views on the "laws of god"(physics). :D
Hi, I'm an 8th grader (also called 2nd year hs here) who's really enthusiastic about physics. This is my first post, so I hope you're okay with me making some mistakes (I've been reading stuff on this forum for a while now, though). Physics is still 2 years ahead, and I've tried waiting but I...
Does anyone actually believe this statement? I had a few well meaning, though severely misguided, people try to tell me this back when I was in high school. How can it be better? No bills? So what? Do people just forget what it was like to actually be in high school (or worse, did they peak in...
Hi, I'm a high school senior and I was planning on studying Aerospace Engineering but my local university doesn't have it so I was opting to study ME and then move to a bigger uni where they have AE so I can get my masters degree there. Is that a good idea? Plus where would I work after I get my...
I basically started learning physics 4 months ago. I want to cover the whole physics school curriculum in the next 9 months, as well as the important chemistry and maths. I want to be prepared to start a physics degree in 9 months. I have around 4 hours a day(approx) to devote to it. I want to...
I've somewhat hit a very unwanted bump in the road, and I would like some outside assistance on the matter.
I'm currently in my junior year of high school, and I've only covered Algebra 1, Geometry, and I'm currently in Algebra 2. The average student at this school would've taken Algebra 1 in...
Hi Physics Forum! This is my first post
I enrolled in adult education for Pre-calculus 12 and Physics 12.
My marks weren't too good coming out of high school because of personal reasons. Anyway, in terms of Pre-calculus I can do it with my eyes closed. But when it comes to physics all I can do...

Hello I am a senior in High School and I'm wanting to become a mechanical engineer but I have an issue I'm wondering how much of a disadvantage I would have for not taking Physics or Precalc in High school. I am now studying them up by myself even though I can't take them in High-school.
Hey, I am a freshman in High School and I have a very superior IQ but I am in normal classes. This is due to ADHD and I used to be lazy in school. Anyways, algebra 1 is VERY boring. I want to teach myself geometry, algebra 2, Pre Cal, and Calculus because I love math. Also I feel like it will...
I'm trying to understand forces a bit more, but i have questions that I've been searching online for and can't find an answer. My questions:
Question 1. is Fnet = ma? Because I'm doing some questions my teacher gave us and the explanations say to use F=ma, not Fnet. F and Fnet aren't the same...
If you are a high school student, a physics buff, and enjoying independent study and exploring, here are some recommendation for you:

Physics is pretty easy to contextualize in a kid's everyday life, but it breaks down at a certain point. Its easy to reference the motion of cars, roller-coasters, falling objects, etc... But things like air-resistance always sort of get in the way. For example: A recent news item told of a tape...
My brother is currently doing his AS/A-Levels (11th - 12th grade) for maths and further maths. However he is unsatisfied with his textbooks as they focus purely on memorisation and don't really explain the mathematics behind concepts. He wants textbooks that not only teach the content but also...
Please physicsforums members, I would like help to find an advanced level textbook that covers up high school physics up to university entrance or maybe beyond that a bit.

So, I want to write a paper for this year's science fair.
I wanted to ask, if anyone could give me a few suggestions on some cool topics?
It doesn't necessarily have to be Chemistry, it could be Physics, Mathematics, Bio, etc.
If anyone has some ideas about Food Chemistry, that'd be cool too...
I'm not too creative, but I'm trying to compile a list of possible ideas that my engineering team can do during this school year. Projects or contests would be great fun, but I can't think of anything. Does anyone here have any ideas of possible ideas for an engineering team in school? Our skill...
Hi, so I'm new to this forum and wanted to ask for some advice. I REALLY am interest in string theory and I've read around the topic a lot without actually learning about it. In my school we can do an independent study project or ISP. When students do ISPs they have to have a project that can be...
Hi all,
I am currently a junior. I am taking the standard AP Physics C this semester, and in the spring hope to take a formal Classical Mechanics course at a local college (to cover lagrangians, hamiltonians, calc or variations, all that good stuff). Next year, I will hopefully take a...
What are some of the physics and calculus textbooks in common use in American high schools today?
I have this fantasy that I want to finish out my career as a H.S teacher rather than an aging cube jockey. I'm pretty sure I understand the material at the high school level, or at least can...
I'm going into Senior year. I live I have taken 9 (3 I paid for so they don't count as dual enrollment) dual enrollment courses and next year I'm taking 4 more. I've reached my limit on college dual enrollment courses yet I have 2 spots in my schedule. I would like to use these to take...
