Latex is a stable dispersion (emulsion) of polymer microparticles in water. Latexes are found in nature, but synthetic latexes are common as well.
Latex as found in nature is a milky fluid found in 10% of all flowering plants (angiosperms). It is a complex emulsion consisting of proteins, alkaloids, starches, sugars, oils, tannins, resins, and gums that coagulate on exposure to air. It is usually exuded after tissue injury. In most plants, latex is white, but some have yellow, orange, or scarlet latex. Since the 17th century, latex has been used as a term for the fluid substance in plants, deriving from the Latin word for "liquid." It serves mainly as defense against herbivorous insects. Latex is not to be confused with plant sap; it is a distinct substance, separately produced, and with separate functions.
The word latex is also used to refer to natural latex rubber, particularly non-vulcanized rubber. Such is the case in products like latex gloves, latex condoms and latex clothing.
Originally, the name given to latex by indigenous Equator tribes who cultivated the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis, was "caoutchouc", from the words caa ('tear') and ochu ('tree'), because of the way it is collected.
Hello everyone,
I take notes strictly with Latex, as I am able to get more done in a day by not taking hand written notes; and lately I have been contemplating using latex to write up solutions to problems for the same reason, that I might get more done in a day. My concern is, however, that...
I have been facing this problem from quite some time. It usually gets ok after refreshing the page but now I sometimes need to refresh the page more than 2-3 times, its getting annoying.
Is someone else facing this problem or is it a problem on my end?
If it helps, I am using the latest...
As a way of practicing my Latex skills and asking about antiderivatives.
Suppose we have
\int\frac{1}{x^2 + a}dx
a is just a constant
Now I recognize this to be
\int\frac{dx}{x} whose antiderivative is \frac{\ln{|x|}}{dx} + C
The question is: In the first function, I could make a...
Dear all,
For those newbie in Latex like me, I found this website: http://arachnoid.com/latex/
It displays equations immediately once you type them at the Latex editing window. No need to put the itex and /itex .
This is useful for those who tend to preview their post a lot to keep track if...
I find it easier to compose derivations in offline latex software, which is TexMaker, and then post it to PF if I need to seek help or discuss something.
This works well except for in-line TeX:
TexMaker uses a 'commence inline TeX' code that is the same as the 'end inline TeX' code, which...
If I want to post a new thread or a new post , and if my post needs some mathematical statement , say in first order logic then I need to use Latex to make my posts readable , but it seems that the site doesn't support LaTeX ! then What to do ? any suggestions ?
Maybe this isn't the right sub-forum to post this on, so I'm sorry if that's the case...
In the past I've seen downloadable templates for various journals. I'm trying to find one for the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ) but I can't seem to pull anything up. Does anyone know where I might be able...
What should one do when they cannot solve a Latex error? Should the report tool be used to get the attention of a moderator?
Also, can anyone recommend a light weight Latex editor for Windows? It can be quite challenging to type in long and complex equations.
If I want to start using LaTex on the physics forum, is the best way to do it just to learn all the coding? This seems like quite a task for me (I've never learned any computer language thing). I downloaded MiKtex (LaTex software) and was hoping that it would somehow write up the proper syntax...
The frustration of not being able to talk to my friends on facebook with the help of latex to describe what I'm trying to get across if very annoying. Sinse PF has a huge member base and is extremely popular, would it be an idea if PF and a few other major science / math forums got together to...
I am playing with creating boxes around my examples in my notes.
I could do this:

I want to write math symbols along with normal text on my google site. I googled on how to go about doing that. That led me to this page https://sites.google.com/site/gencoreoperative/index/articles-and-hacks/google-s-latex
So now what I did was put "Prove that for any natural number <img...
I'm not having any success with https://www.physicsforums.com/mathjax/test/preview.html
No matter what I type, it just comes back blank. Bug, user brain damage, or my environment? (Same results with both IE and FF).
I'm reading Georgi Shilov's Linear Algebra and at the bottom of page 10 is has an equation a_{ij}=\lambda b_i+\mu c_i +\ldots +\tau ?_i
Where the ? is there is a symbol that I don't know. It looks like a curly lowercase f (like an integral symbol with a short stroke through the top part). It...
Detexify will allow you to hand write the character you don't know and then it will give you suggestions on which it could be as well as the code to produce it.
I know this isn't the appropriate place to post this, but I just couldn't stop myself after hearing something this big (to me atleast!)! I urge you to read through the following carefully:-
There is currently an online petition at Change.org for the implementation of LaTeX in Facebook! For...
Will the formulas typed in latex ever be able to be viewed on the PF app?
It is primarily what I use and many equations are quite difficult to read when written in raw latex. (The fact that I don't know latex probably doesn't help.)
Just wondering if any mentors or really anyone for that...
This works when making your own pdf files. On site, I don't know. If you can set it in the background of Math Jax, then it would be good here too.
Latex doesn't have a \arctanh. That probably means there is no sinh, cosh, etc versions as well.
I only know for a fact about arctanh because I...
I haven't been able to see any LaTeX for about an hour. I tried to reboot my computer and even tried internet explorer (instead of firefox), but all I see is plain text.
$$\LaTeX$$
Latex produces some really good looking documents and because of this I tried to pick it up. I was hoping it would make typing up my maths assignment a much quicker process.
What I find insanely frustrating is that because of all the marks up in a .tex file it becomes impossible to navigate...
There was not enough room to fit my graphs in the text where they were supposed to go so latex put them in the next page. This meant that this page only has these two graphs and the text begins again on the page after that. There is a lot of space between (see attached). How do i make it take up...
Hello MHB,
I am curious how I can make these "[" "]" bigger in latex cause it does not look nice when I do it. Exemple:
[3xy+\frac{3x}{3y}\ln(2)]_{\frac{x^2}{3}}^x
Notice just I did just type some number but how can I make it a lot nicer in latex cause that does not really look good.
Regards,
I was just on a thread and I noted that MarkFL's \bar operator didn't look quite as nice as using the \overbar operator. It worked for me when I first tested it in the thread, but when I posted it the tex box gave me \overbarAB ie. \overbar{AB}
Since it worked for me the first time I can only...
Is anybody here able to work as well on the computer with something such as latex as with pencil and paper? Sometimes I think it would be nice to just carry my computer with me, and not fifty pages of blank paper, pencils, erasers, etc.
I'd like to be able to sit and work anywhere, not...
Please help! Alignment of very very long equations in latex
Hi all,
I need to type very long equations in LATEX.
\begin{equation} x = x'' + y'' + blah blah blah + z'' + blah ...\end {equation}
When I compile and create the pdf , the equations(the long ones) run into the edge of the...
I am new at the forums and still getting used to writing in Latex. I found that it is easier for me to write my LateX in this editor:
http://www.codecogs.com/latex/eqneditor.php
and then copy to the physics forum.
So, I wanted to ask you guys, do you know any other tricks you want to...
Hey everyone,
I'm trying to find out some way to change the \subsubsection format in LaTeX so that the number comes after the word "Definition" or "Theorem" etc. Now obviously, I could simply use \textbf{} and put my stuff in there and ignore the \section commands altogether, but then I would...
What is double line in ##LaTex?## I tried ##"//"## twice, but the compiler does not accept it.
The old ##" /linebreak[2] "## command does not work neither?
Thanks
Lately I've been interested in tikz, which is a latex extension.
Since I would still like some way to quickly draw something in a post, I'd like to recommend tikz.
It is a latex extension of which I hope it can be installed as part of the latex engine.
I have no clue however if it can be...
Does anyone know where I can find this? I'm having a heck of a time finding it on google. It was this little app where you could just draw a symbol and it would give the latex code for the symbol. I remember it saved my a lot of time when I was just learning latex and I would still have a use...
I can't seem to make a cylinder that is circular on the yz axis and runs length wise down the x.
Evgeny.Makarov do you know how to accomplish this?
I tried using \filldraw with the arc command to round and shade the circular sides but it wasn't going so well.
I haven't found a thread for latex tests, but I'm sure there's at least one of them. So feel free to move this post.
##\begin{array} \Phi (a, \theta ) = \sum _{l=0}^ \infty [A_l a^l + B_l a^{-(l+1)}] P_l (\cos \theta ) = V_a \\ \Phi (b, \theta ) = \sum _{l=0}^ \infty [A_l b^l + B_l b^{-(l+1)}]...
Hello all. Brief disclaimer, I'm not exactly a luddite but I'm no programming wiz either so I can't talk about these issues on a very technical level. I can however follow directions, so if I have to do something on my end, I would be able to with some guidance.
Basically the problem I'm...
When I'm typing latex math (with frequent bras and kets) in the quantum forum, I often put this first:
\def\<\rangle
\def\>\langle
because this is annoyingly ugly: ##<\psi | \phi>,~##
but this: ##\langle\psi | \phi\rangle##
is a pain to type and edit if there's a lot of it.
(There's...
A well-known bug in vBulletin (the software of this forum) is the 50-character bug. Try this:
Nowisthetimeforallgoodmentocometotheaidoftheircountry. This "word" is just over 50 characters long, and you can see that vBulletin forces a space in-between the n and the t of "country", right at the...
An exact copy of a working LaTeX code doesn't work!?
OK, someone needs to explain this to me, because my head is about to explode. Forum member Jorriss has a LaTeX code in his signature. It includes the LaTeX code \Psi in two places. The second one is displayed correctly. The first one isn't...
I need some kind of environment in Latex where you can write whatever you want without it interpreting it. The reason is I need to include a MATLAB code. Most places I go says I have to use the lstlisting environment, but that doesn't work. Or at least I get this error:
! Package inputenc...
latex: "include" with path, not just filename
Say, a co-worker and I are writing two separate sections for the same document; each will get large and have many figures. Somewhere, I read that 'include' is more convenient than 'input' for large documents and for actual (sub)documents than just...
So I have some spare time which I decided to use to learn a new software. I thought of learning LaTex but I could not really find good reasons to do so. I do research in Materials Science / Condensed Matter Physics and in my field it is very common to communicate documents written with MS Word...
