A school is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces and learning environments for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is sometimes compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called a university college or university.
In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary (Elementary in the US) and secondary (Middle school in the US) education. Kindergarten or preschool provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after secondary school. A school may be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods.
Non-government schools, also known as private schools may be required when the government does not supply adequate, or specific educational needs. Other private schools can also be religious, such as Christian schools, gurukula (Hindu School), madrasa (Arabic schools), hawzas (Shi'i Muslim schools), yeshivas (Jewish schools), and others; or schools that have a higher standard of education or seek to foster other personal achievements. Schools for adults include institutions of corporate training, military education and training and business schools.
In homeschooling and distance education, teaching and learning take place independent from the institution of school or in a virtual school outside a traditional school building respectively. Schools are commonly organized in several different organizational models, including departmental, small learning communities, academies, integrated, and schools-within-a-school.
I am finishing up high school soon and I plan to go straight back to school, so I figure now is a good time to consider some things, such as.. What are some well known schools in Canada for physics? (I am especialy interested in anything to do with aerospace)
I'm aware of the U of Toronto and...
I am a physics major, and I currently attend Georgia State University. I have been accepted as a transfer student to Georgia Tech, which is a better school than State, especially in math and the physical sciences. I plan to go to graduate school in physics or possibly medical school. My grades...
I am a senior math major in the US who would like to go to a graduate school in mathematics. I am still in a process of finding where to apply. Most of the schools that I have been looking so far are in the U.S., but recently I realized there are some decent schools in Canada as well (U British...
Just out of curiosity, how many graduate schools should a person apply too? I want to enter into a Ph.D or master's program in astrophysics. So far I have a relatively decent gpa, 3.8+, 4.0 in major. Summer internship with possible future publication, & I think my recommendations are solid...
I'm applying to grad school this year and I'm thinking I might be interested in exploring lattice gauge theory. Honestly, I don't know very much about the subject but it sounds very interesting to me. Does anybody know which schools have lattice gauge theory and which schools are really good...
I'm about to apply to grad programs in AE/ME and computational science right now. I have a general interest in doing numerical and computational work on physical problems. So that's why I'm considering computational science but not applied math programs. For now, the main area of interest I have...
I'll be applying to grad schools over the next few months, and I've talked to a few professors at my university who have told me that it would be a good idea to find professors whose research specializes in what I'm interested in and email them, telling them a little about myself and that I'm...
I have about 10 schools that I'm interested in but I think that may be too many and maybe I should narrow it down to like 6 or 7. Is 10 too many or should I just go ahead and apply to all of them? Would applying to 10 schools take twice as much of my time as applying to 5 or would it just take...
I'm majoring in Physics and minoring in Math at a highly ranked liberal arts school (top 25). I have a 3.9 overall GPA and I'm not sure what my math and Physics GPA is but its higher than 3.9. I have all A's and one A- in math and Physics. I got an 800 on the quantitative section of the GRE...
I'm thinking of auditing a course this Fall, since I find it very interesting and would love to take it, but I don't have time to do the homework and papers and such. It's called "Science and Religion" and is just a two hour lecture every Wednesday evening. What would a graduate school think of...
"Fall Back" Schools Near Los Angelos CA?
Hi all, I am trying to get into a physics grad program near where my niece/nephew will grow up: in Saugus, CA (a suburb about 50 minutes north of Los Angeles...sp?). There are plenty of physics schools over there, but to be realistic I prolly won't get...
Hi guys,
I'd like to know universities, other than harvards and princetons, that have very strong groups in theoretical particle physics and need students. Mostly strong groups in theoretical particle physics are in the top 10 universiies, like MIT and so on but it is extremely hard to get into...
Hi,
I need information or advice on transferring to another university. I am a graduate student and next fall will be the start of my third year. I finished my courses with good GPA and I am starting to study QFT. The problem is that my university is very strong in Condensed matter and...
I got an undergraduate degree in physics years ago, but recently I've been thinking I'd like to try applying to grad school in the next year or two. The subject I'm most interested in studying is quantum computing and more general quantum information science, with an emphasis on the theoretical...
I'm sure this is a question that comes up a lot but I can't find an old thread on it, and I've seen a lot of varying advice all over.
How many grad schools should I apply to?
Personally, I'm an junior (will be a senior in the fall) physics major with a 3.9 overall and about a 3.8 in math...
Hello, I'm a ungrad inbetween my junior and senior year, and I'm looking to go into particle physics. Specifically, I'm interested in entering a graduate program with researchers who specialize in Yang-Mills, string theory, and/or SUGRA. I'm also interested in gravitation and its relationship...
Hello everyone,
I'm currently a Grade 11 IB student living in BC Canada. For the last few years, it has been my goal to get into a good American university. I'm thinking of going into some sort of engineering in university (electrical or mechanical, or both!) However, for the past month, I've...

I'm hesitating whereas I should make some time to prepare for the Putnam. If I don't have to, I won't, because I'd rather do something else with the little free time I have to be frank. So, in short, is it worth preparing for, if my goal is purely to make my grad application look better? I'm not...
Hi,
I heard that in order to get into top graduate physics(and engineering) programs, people should go to research universities that have professor obtaining their PhD degrees from top universities such as MIT, Stanford, UC-Berkeley, Caltech. Is that true?
I feel really bad about my recent...
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie in this forum :) I have some questions regarding application for graduate study and need your help.

How negatively do UC schools in California view retaking classes ? By the way, altogether it would be about 8 W's & repeating about 6 classes total.
How about, if you have a 4.0 but retook classes and got A's, however got D's in them ALL the first time, would you have a very good chance of...
Infromation on getting into get into the "top" graduate schools
Hi,
I am currently doing my undergraduate in math and physics at York University in Toronto. It is not considered to be a top Canadian school in physics. I am doing relatively very well in the school that I am in (I getting A's...
I don't know about the past, but these days it's very hard for MSME students to get funding, according to what the professors at my school say. However, I have heard that some MS students start off unfunded and then get funding after a semester or two. I was just wondering if anyone here can...
Hello PF. I am finishing my third year of a Math and Physics program in Canada. I am getting very anxious about my marks and grad school, and what sorts of schools I should look into applying to / expect to actually get into. I'm asking partially because my friends always seem to be doing...

Hello all,
I'm currently a year away from getting my BS in Electrical Engineering, and I need some recommendations for graduate school. My main interest is in theoretical neuroscience, and cognitive (brain) modeling. Unfortunately, however, there is little money out there for AI. As such...
So I'm finishing my first year of school at the school nearest to my home. The physics department here is very small and unorganized, and I'm not a big fan of the professors. It was only this year I realized I wanted to major in physics so the quality of the department wasn't on my mind when I...
I'm a math major at a small college (kind of in the middle of nowhere), and am 14 years old. Since I had a ton of AP credit from high school and middle school, I have sophomore standing even though this has been my first year. In high school (for math) I did AP calc, multivariable calc...
I applied to graduate schools (for PhD programs) hoping to enter a place where I could be scientifically creative and collaborate with like-minded individuals.
I chose my current school because they offered me the best package, it had a good location, I was promised an RA position and I...
I am going to start my MS in physics next year as I finish my BS, because I am enrolled in my schools BS/MS program. I was wondering about getting into Phd programs after finishing my masters. Would I be pretty much relegated to staying at the school I already received my masters at? Would top...
I have an MS in physics and did not get into any of the phd programs I applied to. What schools are still accepting applications, and which ones might still have funding for students? I am interested in many areas of physics and my experience is in computation and some nuclear. I have average...

In recent years, students from my alma mater (a small liberal arts college) have had trouble getting into the top mathematics PhD...
In California, what are the main differences between UC and CSU schools as far as the type of student?
Would you say it's true the UC schools are more for people who want to be scientists and researchers and USC schools are more for people who want to get out of college and get a job ?
Just curious as to what schools there are in California offering electrical engineering that would likely accept an engineering student with the following:
Quite a lot of C's, GPA of about 2.5 - 2.9
,lots of W's & repeate classes?
Took about 10 years to finish at the 2 year college, starting...
Why doesn't the US use an education system similar to the one used in China? One in which only those who deserve to go to school can. The majority of people in public schools are not there for academic pursuits and continually ruin the environment for those who are. Why shouldn't there been a...
I'm currently getting my bachelors degree in physics. I have the option of doing a minor at either my own faculty or any of the other faculties of the university. I'm not sure what I want to do yet, but I think doing something completely unrelated might be fun. Will it look bad to future...
Which is better to study electrical engineering at; the university of Santa Barbara, or the university of Sacramento?
It's hard to get a feel for a school without having much more than a name and some info on the web, but which do you feel is a better school or gives a better education in...
I am applying to a number PhD programs and my options are limited due to my main interest in nonlinear dynamics/systems/chaos and related applications. At this point I was thinking of UC San Diego and Brown University as possible reach schools. I've done the research on grad school shopper and...
Of all the complaints that I hear about when the topic of public school teaching is being discussed , the subtopic that always seems to come up is the lack of qualified science teachers that are teaching in public high schools, especially physics teachers. What can be done to address this...
Which other schools do not accept transfer students other than Harvard, or is it only Harvard that doesn't do this? If Harvard accepted transfer students would it over populate their school?
I was wondering if someone could help me decide what sort of math graduate schools I should be applying to. The following is basically all the information I can think of that could affect my application.
I am a senior at one of those big state universities, and I am hoping to graduate this...
Greetings,
I am a mathematics masters student applying for a PhD program in mathematics. I have a strong interest in mathematical physics. My credentials would not allow me to go to a top-rated math PhD program, so I'd have to settle for a second- or third-rate program.
My question is...
I'm currently applying to grad school for a masters in pure math, and saw that carnegie mellon has no application fee. Can you guys think of any other decent math grad programs that have no application fees?
