A school is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces and learning environments for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is sometimes compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called a university college or university.
In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary (Elementary in the US) and secondary (Middle school in the US) education. Kindergarten or preschool provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after secondary school. A school may be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods.
Non-government schools, also known as private schools may be required when the government does not supply adequate, or specific educational needs. Other private schools can also be religious, such as Christian schools, gurukula (Hindu School), madrasa (Arabic schools), hawzas (Shi'i Muslim schools), yeshivas (Jewish schools), and others; or schools that have a higher standard of education or seek to foster other personal achievements. Schools for adults include institutions of corporate training, military education and training and business schools.
In homeschooling and distance education, teaching and learning take place independent from the institution of school or in a virtual school outside a traditional school building respectively. Schools are commonly organized in several different organizational models, including departmental, small learning communities, academies, integrated, and schools-within-a-school.
Hey everyone,

I'm just visiting some good schools for graduate school. So, any recommendations that are roughly in the same area would be greatly appreciated. :biggrin...
I have been in Michigan my entire life and I am sick of this state. I want to go to grad school to study physics (I am interested in photonics and solid state device physics) somewhere in California...somewhere in one of the nicer areas of Cali (So Cal?)
My stats are a 3.5 GPA, double...
Is there any non-US-based institution I could apply to that offers a respectable and comprehensive math degree, and whose language of instruction is English? A place whose deadline hasn't yet passed?
Hello,
I'm stuck making a hard desission. I am a second semester sophamore at a small private school and I would like to graduate with a dual major in Physics and Computer Science with a minor in Business Admin. The only thing that bothers me is that my school only offers a B.A. in physics...
I'm considering Ohio University (where I did my undergrad) and West Virginia University for my phd. Currently, I'm a msc student at a podunk university in Dayton, OH - Wright State U.
As far as I know, both OU and WVU are of equal standing in rankings. I know faculty at both schools, and both...
It's that time of year again... I'm getting ready to take the subject test in physics this weekend, and of course I don't expect to do very well.
My question is this: what are some safety schools to which I should apply?
I'm currently pursuing a master's degree, my thesis topic is in...
Hi there, I'm in the process of applying to graduate schools and am having some trouble deciding what schools to pick. At my current school there is no Astronomy/Astrophysics going on (there's primarily condensed matter, optics /photonics, some bio physics and high energy stuff being done). I...
Hi,
I'm a third year computational physics student at UofA.
I started looking into grad school for physics but I'm not so sure if i can make it into any good grad school with my not so good gpa (around 3.4 ish).
I have no research experience, however I'm planning on being an assistant for...
Hello,
I have a good friend who is interested in studying physics. He lives here in the US. Unfortunatly he is an illegal immigrant from Ireland, and due to a recent ballot measure, he will now be forced to pay an 'out of state' tuition (basically a higher tuition). Double unfortunatly his...
I figured I might as well look outside the US... can anyone list the top 5-10 universities in Canada/Europe for physics? And maybe any disadvantages/advantages to doing so? The only ones I really know are Cambridge and Oxford, and outside of that I don't know about them
So, I have to apply for grad schools soon and wanted to get a list of all the ones I will be applying to so I can give my recommendation letters writers enough time. Originally, I had a list of about 43 schools that I wanted to apply to. They were all in the top 45 schools for Mechanical...
I'm not sure which forum to ask about this...so I will hesistantly ask this question here...and it might be a dumb question.
What's the difference bet. any other UC schools and UCLA?
For example, is UCLA more difficult than UCI, UCSF, etc.? Are they all have the same level of difficulty...
I am only a freshmen in college, but I have plans on attending grad school for physics. Thus far my plans are to go to grad school in Europe. I was just wondeirng if you here could give me some feedback about that idea? Is it silly to think about going to Europe? I am not looking to go to any of...
What are good undergrad schools for theoretical physics, engineering, and math? I still don't know which one I want to major in but I'm only in 9th grade. Also what are pluses(?) and minuses of each as a study?
Thanks
Hi, I have my undergrad degree in Applied Physics and am beginning to apply for graduate studies(phd).
I was wondering what your opinions were for some backup schools, because realistically I don't forsee myself being accepted to some of my greater aspirations (Berkeley, UoFM, Princeton)
I...
right now i am a freshmen at florida state univeristy and majoring in physics. i know that it is a good school, but i am not sure that this is the right place for me. the school seems to be centered aroud sports. the people seem to be centered around parties.

Math Graduate Schools: Views on undergraduate degrees
Hello
How do graduate schools look upon students who receive a B.A. and a B.S? I am planning to do a dual degree with Columbia University, getting a B.A. in math/economics, and a B.S. from Columbia. I then want to go for a PhD in applied...
Is there a site with a list of Canada based graduate schools, I want to pursue graduate school not in the US but Canada. Also my GPA is around 3.1 but it is just the start of my junior year and I plan to improve on that to around 3.3 at least, so I hope its still possible for me to go since my...
Hello everyone,
I am thinking of going abroad to get a masters (or an equivalent) and then try to get into a U.S. grad school for my Ph.D.
I was wondering whether this is a good idea in itself, i.e. perhaps many U.S. schools think that M.Sc. is for people who aren't strong enough for Ph.D., is...
Hey people,
I'm currently finished junior, and now looking for grad schools in medbio physics (preferably medical imaging, i.e. MR, X-ray). Can anyone suggest the best schools for this to apply? Thanks!
I've been accepted to waterloo and uoft, but can't decide between the two. I plan on majoring in physics and both schools have an option for specialization in mathematical physics. Anyone one have any ideas on which is ultimately the better school?
Hi I am a junior in physics and I will be applying to grad schools this fall.
I am currently in a special science program at my school which is highly regarded for the quality of its students. When I register for next year's courses, I might have to make a decision between staying in that...
This past semester I've been working in a group of 4 to look at a certain ketone found in hazelnuts, and it is by far the most frustrating experience I've ever had; every single problem is because people are expected to work together.
The project was 8 weeks of lab, 4 hours per week.
First...
Hi, I'm going to be graduating from high school next year and I am trying to decide on a course of study in university. I really want to be an engineer because I love math, science, and technology and seem to be reasonably good with all of the above. I want to get into research in the field of...

I'm finishing my third year in the math program and the University of Toronto. After my fourth year, I'd like to do a PhD in mathematics. This is a rather open-ended question, but what are the best grad schools for this?
What are the best grad schools for VLSI design? What about decent grad schools? I have almost completed my BSEE, and I'm looking to apply for an MSEE. I'm not really interested in going into academia, so I'm not going to be applying to super-brand name schools.
Is there a ranking system...
Just as the title says. Everyone tells me when deciding which schools to apply to, I should look at what kind of research the faculty members are doing and if any of them interest me. While I agree that this would be the first thing to do, I don't believe one is able to tell (as an undergrad)...
Comp. Physics and Nanotechnology Grad Schools
What do grad schools look for when picking up students in computational physics? Do they expect a degree in computer science with a minor in physics or the other way around? Either?
Same with Nanotechnology: Is physics the standard route? Should...
Prestigious schools vs... where i go
What is the difference between the average person who graduates with a BS in physics from say, Princeton or Harvard vs. the average person who graduates from... ohhhh, say... CSU - Fresno... and other crappy places like that :) Do people in the "better"...
Hi,
I'm a non-traditional student in the process of applying to physics PhD programs and would like any advice about what schools to add to my list. I've been given the advice to apply to 2 or 3 "top" schools, 4 or 5 "next level" and 2 - 3 "safety" schools - schools that I can feel very...
Obviously this is utter sarcasm in the title but if you did not know better and gauged our funding based on what people say... you would think its true. Every time someone starts flappipng their gums off (almost always a fat woman teacher or a mother... and no that is not me being mean, it just...
For the sake of writing a feasible paper on the state of our public schools, I am requesting opinions with supportive information on the state of American public schools, either way(good/bad). Public school is defined as a school which is under control of some form of government, and is...
Can you guys give me some advice?
I'm in Arizona, (Arizona State University) and I'm got accepted to the Aersospace program. I've heard that their Aerospace program isn't that great. I'm alright with moving to anywhere in the country for a good college and experience.
What would be your...
Does anyone know of a publication that gives statistics such as avg. gre scores and gpa's for those who were accepted to math graduate programs?
For ex. Avg. gpa of applicants accepted for Berkely was 3.7
I've tried using peterson's guide but it only gives % accepted to the school...
Hey, was wondering howone would get back in the academic world(grad school) if one has been out for 2-3 years after undegrad.

Hi,
I'm a UK undergrad in his final year and I'm just trying to figure out whether it would be worth me applying to grad schools in the US. I've doent the research and compiled a list of school but I'm starting to wonder whether I'm wasting my time and should just consider applying for a PhD...

The previous thread on this topic is not longer available, so here's an update on Dubya and further suppression of science and proper methodology of theories our children may be exposed to.
Besides IV League and Stanford, what are the best colleges you can come out of with a physics degree and get the highest salary and year annual pay? UC Berkeley? UC Davis? CALPOLY? ECT? ECT?
