A school is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces and learning environments for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is sometimes compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called a university college or university.
In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary (Elementary in the US) and secondary (Middle school in the US) education. Kindergarten or preschool provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after secondary school. A school may be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods.
Non-government schools, also known as private schools may be required when the government does not supply adequate, or specific educational needs. Other private schools can also be religious, such as Christian schools, gurukula (Hindu School), madrasa (Arabic schools), hawzas (Shi'i Muslim schools), yeshivas (Jewish schools), and others; or schools that have a higher standard of education or seek to foster other personal achievements. Schools for adults include institutions of corporate training, military education and training and business schools.
In homeschooling and distance education, teaching and learning take place independent from the institution of school or in a virtual school outside a traditional school building respectively. Schools are commonly organized in several different organizational models, including departmental, small learning communities, academies, integrated, and schools-within-a-school.
I am trying to decide where to finish my bachelor's in Physics/Math/Engineering (trying to remain as much of a generalist as possible). I would like to know where I can look for information on the different areas of research that are being carried out at the universities in TN and TX.
I'm a junior math major in college, and I'd like to apply to some graduate schools when I'm done. If I haven't taken any analysis courses (beyond a basic "advanced calculus" sequence), but I've covered a full year of real analysis on my own, will that make a difference?
I'm thinking of...
So there are two GRE exams that are very similar - biochemistry+cell biology and biology. Do a lot of biology students take those 2 exams? And what do grad schools think of that? (also, do a lot of them also consider taking the GRE chemistry exam too?) From the initial looks of it, it seems that...
Graduate School Advice Needed: Where to Apply with my stats & "backup" schools
As an undergraduate I've studied engineering physics. It seems in general that graduate students in engineering have a lower gpa than those in physics or math. I have since decided I would like to do physics...
I am considering applying for german grad schools (there is a nice financement agreement between Germany and Mexico, and I like the country). Does anyone know where the good physics departments are (specially in cosmology and high energy physics).
Ok so I live in Virginia and want to go to school for engineering, the problem is picking one. I am applying to Virginia Tech and UVA and I should get into those. I am going to apply to MIT just to see if I get in (I have a strong resume but I know it takes a hell of a lot more than that). But I...
Something with advanced classes as well LOADS of advanced research opportunities. I actually plan on a double major of Physics and EE or Computer Science.
I am from the US and I would like to eventually go for my PhD hopefully at a top grad school.
Then I would either like to work at a...
I'm in the final year of my undergraduate studies. My GPA is about 2.5, I have done research (but no paper), I have excellent recomendations and I will sit for the TOEFL and GRE, general and subject - physics test in the next few months. I am interested in experimental high energy physics and I...
currently i'll be entering my 4th yr of undergrad, but plan on staying 4.5 - 5 years in undergrad. I've been thinking about this plan for awhile and what was wondering if its a good idea or not and what i have to do in order to achieve the best success with it:
say i graduate with a degree in...
I'm interested in doing my PhD in theoretical and mathematical physics - i.e. subjects like Quantum Field Theory, String Theory or Quantum Information Theory. My question is which universities in the US have really good programs in these areas?
I was wondering whether or not the new state of the economy (recession) will have much of an effect on graduate school as far as whether schools won't offer as many stipends due to increased living expenses or what not.
Any insight?
How exactly can one prepare an exemplary record for these schools? What is taken into consideration? I'm doing Biochemistry atm, and I'm thinking about going into a grad school for Bio.
Hey guys,
I'll be applying for Physics and Comp. Neuroscience PhD programs in the Fall. Any good schools worth applying to? Which schools consider "neuro-related" physics their strength? All I know is on the East Coast, UNC has a Neurophysics lab, and on the West Coast, Berkeley & UCSD are...
I've been searching online for one of the US News reviews, but I have found nothing as of yet. Would anyone here know what are the top ten undergraduate schools in physics and know the rankings?
Hi,
(I'm not too sure where to post this but this seems to be the most suitable place. Apologies if I am wrong.)
If I am majoring Astrophysics and applying to grad schools, is my Math gpa an important factor in addition to my Physics gpa , Astronomy gpa and cumulative gpa? If so, how...
Hi everyone,
Does anyone possibly have a list of PA schools that are in the top 5 or 10? Is Penn State in the top? Well I did do a search in a way it's in the top 10 of party school. That is not what I am looking for. lol. I am looking for schools in the top meaning either made it as an IV...
It is still a considerable ways off from the time I'll be applying, but I'm trying to get an idea of what grad programs are realistic for me. My primary disadvantage is that I started at community college, and my first course there was a high-school level course (intermediate algebra).
I...
So I'm a big-headed idiot and only applied to top schools. Friday I got my last rejection letter from all the physics programs I applied to (it was UCLA's). I'm guessing it was because one of my weakspots as an applicant showed up on two-three of my recommendations (I'm lazy). I wasn't expecting...
Hey all. I am going next week to tour all the grad schools that accepted me and to meet with prospective supervisors and research groups. Any hints on what to ask or what to look for when making a decision?
Hello. I know that ranking is not everything and it really depends on particular research field and professors.
But I do want to get a rough picture on the overall reputation of these graduate schools at this stage.
For the field of mechanical engineering or applied mathematics, how would you...
I'm sure similar questions have been asked before, but all the threads Google and the search seem to find are the standard lists of ivy league schools. If you know of a good thread or two please drop a link.
I'm transferring out of a community college, and I was planning to transfer directly...
hi, I'm from the island of mauritius, and I'm finishing high school this year, and should start planning for uni asap. i wish to do medicine, but not here, because we don't have all te facilities.

Hi-
I was wondering, does anybody know anything about the Aerospace Engineering programs at either Virginia Tech or Penn State (University Park Campus). Possibly anything about how they rank compared to other Aerospace Engineering Programs in the United States (or compared to each other)? As...
I finished by first semester of university. My grades are as follows:
Math (4 credits) - 100% - A+
Phys (3 credits) - 100% - A+
English (3 credits) - 81% - A-
Chemistry (4 credits) - 97% - A+
Biology (3 credits) - 88% - A
So, unlike most US schools, my school has three classes of A...
Assuming that I have enough money for all the application fees (I do), how many grad schools should I choose to apply to? I am looking to do high energy theory (with an aim toward GUT). After some research into good programs in places I would actually like to live (after moving to California...
I'm looking into suggestions for physics grad school based on specialization (every search online just does it by state, which is secondary priority to me)
my interests are: bose-einstein condensates, optics (maybe quantum optics), particle physics.
I've heard U of Colorado is good for...
Is collective punishment an effective and/or acceptable disciplinary tool in schools these days and how prevalent is it?
Do any of the educators here employ it and if so under what circumstances and did it work?
Are any of the students here ever subject to collective punishment and what is...
Hello everyone,
I live in Allentown, PA. I am looking for colleges maybe in or near my area that is an engineering school that specailize for Environmental Engineering as a BS degree. Is there any schools like that in my area? I been trying to search by using Yahoo and Google search but I am...
If your grades for your first freshman physics courses are average, ranging from C's to B's, but your academic performance is decent in your upper level undergraduate physics courses.
Hello everyone...
I'm transferring from Penn State to NC State and I currently have 92.5 credits, 85.5 of the credits transferred and I had a 3.64 at Penn State, and now it says I have a 3.68 because a few of the credits that didn't transfer must have highered my gpa.
But one of my...
RF/Microwave: Grad Schools
What are some good electrical engineering graduate schools in the U.S. that are doing some good RF/microwave research?
In a previous post, las3rjock told me about three graduate schools that he thought were good at microwave engineering: MIT, University of...
Hi everyone,
Does anyone know how widespread it is for graduate schools to set a "quota" on international graduate school applicants? Or even if it's not a quota, how often they set higher minimum grades / GRE scores for admission?
I talked to UVa and Stony Brook and they say that they don't...
So after high school I had applied to two colleges, Clarkson University and University of Vermont. I ended up going to Clarkson first and, almost dropping out, went to UVM later. I now have 2 years left and am about to transfer again. My GPA is 2.86.
I've spent the last year saving up...
So, I've been applying to several grad schools for Spring 2008. I'm graduating this semester Mid-December.
ALL of the graduate schools I applied wants my final transcript before they can even begin reviewing my application. Is this how the graduate admissions work? How can I choose which...
Hey there i was wondering if anyone could refer me to a decent university Ontario, preferable Southwestern ontario. If anyone is currently attending a school or knows of one, please contact me at martindudaniec@hotmail.com

Three High Schools—Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt— competed in a track meet. Each school entered one man, and one only, in each event. Susan, a student at Lincoln High, sat in the bleachers to cheer her boyfriend, the school's shot-put champion. When Susan returned home later in the day, her...
Are there any schools with comp sci departments that have modeling (c++ or matlab) specializations? (ie, some type of degree that would focus on mathematical applications in programming)
'Lo all,
I am wondering what are some good physics graduate schools that are in very urban areas. And by urban, I mean has a population density high enough for a frequently used rail system (ie, New York, Chicago, London), and preferably > 500,000 people. Only exception is LA and San Diego. I...
So I will be applying for math grad schools this upcoming Fall, and I made a list of factors that are important to me in choosing a grad school, and I tried to grade it on a 1-5 scale, 5 being ideal.
I created the following rubric for myself:
- Location
- Weather
- "Prestige"/Rankings
-...
Hello all,
I used to post in this forum under another name, so I'm not a complete stranger to you all. But I suppose this counts as my "first post." Quick background on me: I'm still in junior college and I'm looking to transfer to a University. At first, I was looking at schools with really...
Hi, I'll be transfering colleges come this August and I'm curious about the difference in work ethic and classroom material that I may encounter. The school I attend now isn't very science oriented. It's a small school, and hence a small physics department (although it has its hand in some...
Let's say I'm applying to a school, in my case for grad but let's also suppose for undergrad, they see my transcript/my grades and they see that I did badly in one class. Can they ask my professor about this?
For example, let's say I'm applying to grad school and I got a C in my topology...
I sent an application quite early to one of the grad schools I am applying. Apparently they wanted a transcript, so the transcript I sent was one in with Fall's semesters' grades. (I applied really early, like around March for Spring 2008 entrance, so I didn't have my Spring 2007 grades yet)...
Here's the deal: I'm currently a sophomore in high school and I need to choose my classes for junior year. I've made a thread like this, but I'm addressing a newer issue here. I'm taking AP Physics B this year and that is the only AP/Honors class I have taken so far.
Here's what I've...
Honors Chemistry, Is it essential for getting into good schools??
I'm in High School. I'm planning on majoring in engineering or science related fields and I don't know whether I should take the only chemistry offered at our school, Honors Chemistry. The only thing is that there is only one...
I'm currently in the second year of my bachelor degree (three years) in physics (in Hungary) and I'm starting to look for a school, where I could continue my studies and get the master degree. I'm mostly interested in mathematical and theoretical physics.
I've found following universities...
I was watching a youtube video (this) and it said Americans don't get to choose what school they go to, but the school is assigned based on where you live. Is that really true?
Some other stuff would be interesting to know as well. Do most US schools have cafeteria? Do those cafeteria make...
