Experience is the process through which conscious organisms perceive the world around them. Experiences can be accompanied by active awareness on the part of the person having the experience, although they need not be. Experience is the primary subject of various subfields of philosophy, including the philosophy of perception, the philosophy of mind, and phenomenology.
Several different senses of the word "experience" should be distinguished from one another. In the sense of the word under discussion here, "experience" means something along the lines of "perception", "sensation", or "observation". In this sense of the word, knowledge gained from experience is called "empirical knowledge" or "a posteriori knowledge". This can include descriptive knowledge (e.g. finding out that certain things are true based on sensory experience), procedural knowledge (e.g. learning how to perform a particular task based on sensory experience), or knowledge by acquaintance (e.g. familiarity with certain people, places, or objects based on direct exposure to them).
In ordinary language, the word "experience" may instead sometimes refer to one's level of competence or expertise, either in general or confined to a particular subject. In this sense of the word, "experience" generally refers to know-how rather than descriptive knowledge (or in other words, on-the-job training rather than book-learning). This article is not about "experience" in this sense, but is instead about the immediate perception of events.
How often do you get hard to recall the name of person(or friend) who is near you , at school, college or your workplace?
It often happens to me. And it is so embarassing.
Moreover it is much embarassing to ask that particular friend for his name or others to tell his or her name.
Then...
Hi, at the moment I am studying at a community college. Hoping on finishing transferable units on a civ/meche program and then transferring to some university. But, at the moment I need a job. Is it possible to get an apprenticeship with some company or is that wishful thinking? What do...
Hey guys,
I am a rising junior in college. I am doing my first serious research in physics this summer. I just get started. The topic is nothing like something that I'm familiar with. I am the only undergrad in the research group. I have been trying to catch up but I'm going way too...
Considering REU without "research" experience
Hello PF,
I know REU's are starting (or at least most of them) but I'm planning for the next summer. I researched a couple and read about what they consider for admission to their program. Most of them list "Research Experience" as such. I myself...

Do photons experience "instant" lifetimes?
So we know that, for instance, the Andromeda Galaxy is about 2 million lightyears away. That means that from an observer on Earth, we would watch a photon take 2 million years to actually reach that galaxy.
But if we're the photon itself, would it...
In order to give a quick background: I am a first-year university student. So far pretty much all I have been doing is to study from textbooks, solve problems, etc. Thus I have been able to attain A's in all exams so far. Yet, the question pops up whether it would be more beneficial (beyond the...

I was wondering if Top programs are more accomedating to those with some work experience before applying. I want to try for the top ie MIT, UCs, Stanford etc... but I definately would like to work for a bit before conintuing on to grad studies. Is it less competitive for these...
so I recently visited a grad program Open house but didn't get a chance to meet some faculty whose research I was interested in and didn't get to meet their grad students. Would it be appropriate to email those grad students to ask how they like working for their PIs and what their opinions...
Alice is free-falling towards the event horizon (EH) of a black hole (BH) large enough such that local tidal forces are negligible. Bob is sufficiently ("infinitely") far away such that he is unaffected by the BH and inertial. Bob's view of Alice is well established: she will appear to slow...
Graduate School--Yale Experience
Hi there,
I was wondering if I can find any member that goes/went to Yale University for a graduate program. I got accepted into Yale and Michigan for the PhD program in experimental Nuclear Physics/HEP. Though both are equally renounced and are offering kinda...
As a final year BEng Civil Engineering undergraduate, I currently hold an offer to do a fully funded PhD in Computational Engineering. I should be 23 by time I finish this. Should I opt to not remain in Academia, and with virtually no industrial experience, what sort of decent paid work could...
I witnessed what is called the dance of the sun. I saw an apparition what is now known as our Lady of Fatima. I am living proof to tell. Something so strange, that many to this day don't believe me, and I don't expect them to, as this is so hard to prove in this day in age. But what I am...
Hey PF Folkadins =]
DO any of you have an experience with IRAF? I'm currently doing a BSc project on analysing spectral changes during periods of flaring on dMe type stars and I am having some issues extracting my ccd spectra.
In IRAF, I have run apall. And followed the steps of defining...
I go to a big school with lots of physics research available. I started in a group at the beginning of this year, and I'm a junior and have good grades. From looking on different REU program websites it seems like a lot of them seem to want people with limited access to research at their...
Has anyone had sleep paralysis before? I experienced my first instance of sleep paralysis last night and it's extremely odd. My eyes were completely open and I heard the voice of my brother, and the noise of my other brother running downstairs, this was all accompanied by zippers opening and...
Do you think that they are better at teaching the course or worse at teaching the course, as compared to newer professors who might have taught the course for only a couple of times?
Obviously, I realize that there is no clear-cut relationship. *But*, there are certainly patterns to look for...
I'm coming to the end of my chemistry degree (in the UK) and I've been looking into applying for jobs as a trainee patent attorney. I'm hoping that someone here can give me some valuable advice. Am I a suitable candidate? What's the competition like?

Hello all! I am about to graduate with a BS in engineering - electrical.
For my major, it was required we take an introductory C# course. All I really got out of that was how to use for and while loops and if statements, and a little logic. There were topics on more involved stuff like...
One thing I think many of the undergrads, students planning on entering college, and even graduates like me would like to know, from people who are already out in their career, about how their college education affected them.
I'm sure everyone has noticed the type of student who comes onto...

Hi all. I'm considering being a tutor for my dept and later on taking up a TA position.
I do enjoy teaching, but it's a time commitment.
Would such teaching experiences help me in applying to grad schools?
Thanks!
Before I begin, immediately after I saw my first two sightings and after reporting them to nuforc and mufon, I started refining my experience by writing thoughts down to the best degree humanly possible. Take in consideration, what I saw was not supposed to exist and I am describing how it...
I have two questions related to my experience. I don't know whether others experience it too.

I have been looking around on the web, including this forum, regarding the question: "does a photon experience the passage of time?"
reputable sites, including this one, and quotes from reputable people, seem to disagree.
is the answer, "we don't know?"
the implications of a photon...
Hey everyone,
I've noticed a lot of "ghost" threads on here and would like to share a pretty odd experience that I've pondered for quite some time now, and have failed to deduce a reasonable explanation , which is interesting, as I am a pretty scientifically-minded person :-p. I also...
Hi, I'm a Year 12 student in the UK looking to do Physics (Theoretical/Astro) at uni in sept' 2011. A lot of the unis I've looked at so far, predominantly Manchester and Imperial, have mentioned on their websites that work experience can give you the edge, especially as it is so hard to find for...
Do You Experience "Number Forms"?
A "number form" is an involuntary chart, of sorts, that pops into some people's minds when they consider things like calendars (months, days), times of day, the alphabet, or even just numbers from 1 to infinity.
These "charts" have their elements grouped...

Is it because the speed of light is only achieved in vacuum, whereas light which travels through the universe is traveling through a medium and therefore light is not traveling at the speed of light?
Just doesn't make sense to me that a mass-less particle (photon) which should not...
