Experience is the process through which conscious organisms perceive the world around them. Experiences can be accompanied by active awareness on the part of the person having the experience, although they need not be. Experience is the primary subject of various subfields of philosophy, including the philosophy of perception, the philosophy of mind, and phenomenology.
Several different senses of the word "experience" should be distinguished from one another. In the sense of the word under discussion here, "experience" means something along the lines of "perception", "sensation", or "observation". In this sense of the word, knowledge gained from experience is called "empirical knowledge" or "a posteriori knowledge". This can include descriptive knowledge (e.g. finding out that certain things are true based on sensory experience), procedural knowledge (e.g. learning how to perform a particular task based on sensory experience), or knowledge by acquaintance (e.g. familiarity with certain people, places, or objects based on direct exposure to them).
In ordinary language, the word "experience" may instead sometimes refer to one's level of competence or expertise, either in general or confined to a particular subject. In this sense of the word, "experience" generally refers to know-how rather than descriptive knowledge (or in other words, on-the-job training rather than book-learning). This article is not about "experience" in this sense, but is instead about the immediate perception of events.
Im a first year engineering student; just about to start my second semester infact. I've been thinking, and i thought that i should really be starting to get experience other than the theory i learn at uni. Things that will make me more attractive to an employer when it comes time to finish my...
About a year and a half ago, I had an MRI. During the scan something very strange kept happening.
The procedure was actually a series of many scans - it took over an hour to get them all done. Before each one, the tech would go through a procedure he called tuning. The machine would hum...
Hello,
I am going into my senior year and am wondering if I can get into grad school... I know I am not getting into a top 10 school, I would like to go somewhere like U. of Colorado.
I have a 3.6 GPA, and from pretests I expect to get between 650-750 on the GRE. However, I have not been...
I'm thinking very hard about joining the RAN (that's the Australian Navy) as a Weapons Electrical Officer - the systems are pretty interesting, and I've got no problems with a military environment - in fact, doing stuff "in the field" is a huge attraction - but I'd love anecdotes / info from...
Hello, everyone! Long time lurker, first time poster. Has anyone here had any experience in the field of geophysics? I'm trying to decide on an undergraduate major that would best prepare me for graduate studies in environmental science.
question...based on real experience!
Hi everyone
OK... I was frying eggs and was using an old frying pan with a metal handle without any protection so when the pan get hotter and hotter so does the handle.
When I finished using it i tried to cool it down by pouring water on top of it...
[b]1. Six dogs, each having a mass of 32 kg, pull a 325 kg sled horizontally across ice. If each dog applies a force of 86 N [fwd], what average acceleration es the sled experience? Assume that friction is negligible.
Equation:
F=ma
My solution:
6 x 86 N= 516 N
F=ma

Hi there,
If you have done any undergrad research in physics or science, can you share your experiences. What were the major problems you faced during your first research experience? How was the work load? Generally, how many hours did you work in a week? What was your research goal and how...
stupid question, but why don't low mass stars experience nuclear burning beyond helium burning? I mean, after the helium's been exhausted, what's to stop the carbon core from contracting enough to trigger Si burning (or whatever element comes next).
Does anyone have any experience with the program 'Gaussfit'
I am writing a code, but get a lot of problems and there is minimal help from the authors website. Could anyone suggest another place to gain troubleshooting knowledge?

Call me crazy, but I have a hard time with 'we don't know how it works, but it works great! (Buy it!)'

Ok, my major is applied math so I'm obviously going to end up in a scientific or statistical application based job latter on. Does having working experience that doesn't relate to jobs similar to the types aforementioned hinder my prospects later on? I'm thinking that I could get a job over the...

So i just got accepted into the U.of Virginia as a transfer. I've decided to major in physics because it is so much fun. But I am also very interested in engineering and chemistry. I've also already taken intro courses in chemistry, biology, and fluid mechanics as well as freshman...
I was just wondering...if what I saw when I was small was a real UFO.
My family was driving along a freeway with trees on both sides (very thick trees since it was a rural area with no lights) in the afternoon since we had just went to the mall which was very far away.
Then I had my chin...
How important is practical experience with quantum mechanics for understanding, as best as one can, the subject?
For example: Weinberg in his QFT tome, briefly discusses QFT three point interactions in terms of angular momentum states. So, he points out that the interaction can be formulated...
On my way home from taking my wife to a post-op examination, we were crossing a bridge in Skowhegan and saw a beautiful mink dead in the road. :frown: I love minks, weasels, martins, and fishers. They are charming, inquisitive and personable animals.
Hello,
I have a question about the benefit of professional experience in getting into graduate school in physics. I have a BS in physics from a reasonable school and I had the good fortune of being hired after I graduated by a company that is doing research and development on emissions...
Predictability:
Everything in this world has a certain amount of predictability; some call it “odds”.
I’m still young at 33, but I find it boring and redundant to even bother doing a lot of things in my life now. In some cases, it irritates me when someone asks me for my advice, or if someone...
Has anyone heard from any physics REUs?
I applied to the following schools:
UC Davis
Michigan State
U of Oklahoma
U of Washington
U of Minnesota
U of Indiana
I haven't heard from any of them and I am starting to get scared. I definitely should have applied to more.
I am kind of hoping to get a work placement next summer related to physics or astronomy preferably research based. I am a first year undergrad so no one is going to want a useless first year lying around. I see lots of opportunities for 3rd even 2nd year undergrads, I was just wondering do...
I designed an ethernet circuit, and I am trying to lay it out on the board. The app notes and data sheets specify that the ethernet ground be isolated from the system ground and to be connected through a 0 ohm resistor. There are to be no ground or power planes underneath the magnetics and...

Hi guys, i am about to graduate from my mechanical engineering degree, i am thinking of going into the mining industries, becoming an on-site engineer.
People have been telling me that it's a job that pays VERY WELL, but the downfall is that you will have to be on the site for 6 months every...
Where are some good places to apply that I can get some expierence in research in?
Besides my school.
Note: I do not have any prevoius expierence and am a sophomore with an Engineering Physics degree declared.
thought it would be cool to put this here to get some input from other people and possibly people who have a much beefier academic record than myself :p
Basically my thesis for my philosophy course: we can only know reality from experience and perception.
my arguments are:
humans have a...
For those interested, I have just received my third electricity bill after the installation of my solar hot water heater. Currently, I have realized at total of $158 "saved."
Putting that against ~$3500 of total cost, then somewhere between $1200 and $2000 federal tax credit , and the...

Ok, so I'm about to graduate this December. It's time for the real world and I'm completely unprepared. I have a <3.0 GPA, ZERO work experience, ZERO research experience and soon a useless? BA physics degree. Is it possible for me to get a job that pays more than min wage with my horrid...
Ahh, my little fire incident!
Quick intro, first post, but I didn't register just to post this, I registered yesterday. Decided to just start reading through and finding some tutorials. I have an interest in electronics engineering.
FIRE! ... Small fire, just a little bit on top of the...
At this moment I am typing up my resume for an engineering career fair coming up this week. I lost my resume doc from last year, so I have to type it up from scratch and memory. The old one was pretty standard like objective, education, experience etc. I did some volunteer undergrad research...
Homework Statement
A very silly person, intent on catching pigeons on the roof of an apartment building, trips and falls a distance of 44.6 m. She lands on a metal garbage can, crushing it to a depth of 0.453 m and walks away without having been hurt. What acceleration did she experience...
Say I wanted to apply for an NSF grant. Is it an arduous process (the application, I know the research will be)? Is it something that I can hope to do on my own, or do I need the services of a professional grants application specialist?

Very interesting. Though at least one puzzle remains in explaining naturally occurring OBEs, which is to explain why people spontaneously experience shifts in visual perspective. In this experiment they create the perspective shift using cameras and...
Hi,
I'm going to apply for grad school this fall. I'm an international student from Pakistan. Although I don't have extraordinary credentials, but I think I satisfy the minimum - top 10% of my class. I'm also confident of scoring high on GRE Physics as some trials have went unexpectedly well...
Help me find Work Experience Placements!
O noo! I've left it to the last minute, everyone else seems to have work experience placements even though its still months away ! And worst of all, I sent in a few emails to a local University, lazy try i know, and they didn't reply. Does anyone know...
A very vivid approach to learning a few concepts in engineering and physics. Some topics are:

Just out of curiosity I was wondering who prefers AMD over Intel and vice versa. I just built a computer off an AMD X2 processor and love it. I realize that the cache is lower (L2) on the AMD processors now, but how significant of a difference is it? I started getting angry with Intel after two...
So for undergrads in the natural sciences, there exists a multitude of programs and internships and whatnot for research experience--but are there equivalent programs specifically for undergrads studying pure or applied math? What are they like and where can I find out about them? How important...
Well, it has been about three months now that one of my wisdom teeth freaks me out - it gets swollen approximately every two weeks, hurts (sometimes less, sometimes more), and I can't use the entire left side of my mouth to bite ! Which means that I must eat extremely careful and slow, which I...
What do you find to be the most UN-intuitive (non-intuitive?) of classical physics (pre-QM and Relativity)?
Most people find quantum mechanics and relativity very UNinuitive, because they involve phenomenon at subatomic scales or very high speeds, both of which are well outside a human...
I was wondering if I would be able to handle Intro to Java if I go in without any programing experience. I have experience in Calculus up to vector calculus and differential equations, electricity and magnetism physics course, but no programming. You guys think I can handle it?

Currently I'm a second year Engineer(mech)/Science(phys + maths).
An opportunity has arisen for me to be a TA at a secondary school in the area, which will involve demonstrating some physics equipment to the students. The idea is to see if teaching physics would be a career that I might choose...
One of the graduate schools I got accepted to was Ohio State. I was just wondering what people's thoughts were on the quality of the school. Are there any current/previous OSU grad students here who are willing to share their opinions? Thanks!
My REU experience so far...
I started my REU a couple weeks ago (only working 10 hours a week during the spring semester). I am working with a professor that is growing AlN wide bandgap semiconductors bu molecular beam epitaxy. So far it hasn't been what I expected of it, based on what others...
