A case study involves an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of a particular case or cases, within a real-world context. For example, case studies in medicine may focus on an individual patient or ailment; case studies in business might cover a particular firm's strategy or a broader market; similarly, case studies in politics can range from a narrow happening over time (e.g., a specific political campaign) to an enormous undertaking (e.g., a World War).
Generally, a case study can highlight nearly any individual, group, organization, event, belief system, or action. A case study does not necessarily have to be one observation (N=1), but may include many observations (one or multiple individuals and entities across multiple time periods, all within the same case study). Research projects involving numerous cases are frequently called cross-case research, whereas a study of a single case is called within-case research.Case study research has been extensively practiced in both the social and natural sciences.
I'm fundamentally confused about this field of mathematics, yet I need to understand it. The field seems to be dominated by set theory notation, and yet, set theory is nowhere to be seen in any of the typical example problems you might see. I fail to find the intuition anywhere, and I feel like...

Hi,
My name is Veronica and I am in middle school.
I love math and like doing random math problems.
(I think I am quite good and learned a lot from doing random problems
but I do have to admit there are huge gaps in what I know)
Now the teachers are advising my parents to have me stop doing the...
I'm looking for career advice. My concerns are dealing with the complexity of today's world. Should you study physics or engineering (or something else) to be less dependent from others?
It seems to me that the age of rapid development in various areas such as science & engineering as well...
Hello everyone,
I am doing a little bit of research on Digital Delay and Pulse Generators, and I would like to ask a question to anyone who works with that kind of equipment. How do you choose a DD/PG? The main criterion I guess should be it's function (DD/PG models are normally very...
Hi.
What is the point of studying Advanced Elasticity course apart from strength of materials/solid mechanics?? One of my friend says that there's no need to study this as the content of this course is rarely used in industrial practice. He says that the (Stress Analysis) Engineers merely use...
How do I know that I really want to study Math?

Hey all,
Directed towards those of you that have tried, finished or are trying to get into a (US) graduate program (physics, but not necessarily); how long before the test did you start studying. I know in the case of physics the test is mostly lower division knowledge, but I'm just curious...
I'm a student from the UK who has just finished my A-levels. I am looking for further study materials/advice on how to get into more mathematics. I did not study Further Mathematics at A-level, I only completed a single Mathematics A-level. I am interesting in developing my pure mathematics...
I'm currently trying to figure out which field of Physics I should study. I have a huge interest in learning Astrophysics and am open to learning about nuclear physics. My current college has a great program for studying Nuclear Physics and numerous internship and research possibilities for...
I work at a engineering research institute but find it distressing I can't work on my pure and applied mathematics.I want to go to graduate school in math and need time to work on the proofs. My job doesn't allow me to do so.So,I've got a opportunity to work as a night watchman in a MNC...
Can I even purchase one? What's the simplest experimental setup to observe its memory properties? Suppose I just connect a 1.5v battery to its input and observe the output voltage? Would it change with time? I suspect it would. Now suppose I disconnect the battery when the output voltage...
Hello PF,
I'm going to be heading to my 3rd year as a Physics major and I want to make this last month of summer a tad productive. So my plan was to review/self study math using the mathematical methods book by Boas (and maybe some online resources to get more depth on some particular...
Hello,
Some people on PF are currently self-studying calculus and topology. So we thought we might make a post here so that interested people could join us.
We are doing the following books:
Book of Proof by Hammack (freely available on http://www.people.vcu.edu/~rhammack/BookOfProof/)...
For every hour of studying I take a 15 minute break and walk around outside but after about 3 hours of total studying my brain becomes unwilling to think hard.
I try eating, drinking water, and even taking a 1.5 hour break but it's like my brain is only willing to challenge itself for so many...
These exams are merely help for studying for the final in this class. Completing them will not give me any credit whatsoever or affect my grade in the course. The only problem is that our instructor did not give us answers to the tests so we have no idea whether or not we worked the problem...

Hi,
I'm sure everyone has came along some lengthy proofs/arguments that takes quite a while to go through , and might get too overwhelmed at some point.
It seems wise to take a study break, but that sometimes seems to make situations even worse since you might lose your track of thought...
Hm..., my knowledge is limited within this area. Are these genes certainly linked to intelligence? Not too long ago I was reading some literature explaining that no single gene (at the time) was a gene that determined intelligence, so this leads me to believe this research is more simplified and...
Hey everybody,
I'm a little embarrassed to be asking this question as I feel it is extremely easy, but I will do so anyway. I'm self studying some algorithms, and the book that I'm using claims that
a n^2 + b n + c \in \Omega(n^2)
Of course, this is equivalent to saying that there...
Hi everybody, I've been out of school for 4 years and I'd like to learn some physics.
I'll give a summary of my background and I'd like suggestions as to what I should study and in what order. There's an abundance of resources that can be found through Google, but it's hard to decide what is...

It is one month into my summer vacation and the only task I have right now is to prepare for the General GRE that is coming up pretty soon. However, I still try to read a bit of math everyday. I feel extremely guilty if I ever get the thought of not doing math for just one day. I think that...
I have taken Calc 1 (computational) and Discrete Math (low-rigor proofs), and am currently taking Calc 2 (calc is a 2 semester course at my school), in the Fall I will take Vector Cal (mostly computational), probability (mostly computational), and LA (supposed to transition students to the rigor...
Thought you might get a kick out of this. Turns out that listening to the Beatles "When I'm 64" actually makes you younger!
I am something of a critic of published studies showing spurious correlations (i.e. ones which are actually meaningless). These are cited to justify medical procedures...
For a postgraduate study in physics which university is better: Nottingham or Sussex?Sussex is not a Russel group university ,but in the last rankings is in the top 50 of the world.
On the other hand Nottingham is an older university+ a russel group university.
So i would like to hear opinions...
Hi,
I've completed a bachelor in computer engineering (software development). Working as software developer for almost 3 years now. Am 27.
I don't hate the software development but it's wearing me out. It's also that I'm always in the same office, looking at code behind pc. I feel it's not...
I'm not quite sure if my question belongs to this section or not, so I hope I would be posting it in the right place. Anyway, I have troubles understanding Rudin's principals of mathematical analysis. To me, everything he says, is absurd. I can't understand what he says, neither do I want to...
